Solar-powered toilets ordered for Nkandla

2012-12-19 18:06

Mangaung - Hot on the heels of the media storm about Jacob Zuma's Nkandla residence, the president on Wednesday ordered solar-powered toilets to pilot in the village.

Zuma struck the deal while strolling through the Progressive Business Forum's (PBF) exhibition tent at the Mangaung elective conference.

An excited Geo Heyns of AfricanSanitation promised to deliver the toilets to Zumas KwaZulu-Natal village “early in the new year”.

Zuma, who at one point stuck his hand into a test model toilet at the exhibition stand to test the heat that it generates, described the patent as “revolutionary”.

"Right now, in December, I am going to my village and there are households where we could put this in pilot," Zuma told Heyns. "I want them to bring [the toilets] whilst I’m down there, just to do the experiment."

The loo was patented 7 years ago and one AfriSan Elite toilet unit will cost you R6 500.

But, said Heyns, if the president buys bulk, he’ll knock it down to R4 000 per unit. The toilet is waterless and bakes excrement using solar power.

Zuma visited more than a dozen representatives from a wide range of businesses this morning at the PBF exhibition lounge, ranging from African Rainbow Minerals and Nissan South Africa, to fashion event organisers African Fashion International.

      zapadela.tistarocha - 2012-12-19 18:36

The first two are thoughtless, standard drivel for N24 detractors. Iso, You really need to climb up the food chain; Leo, Your feeble attempt at Tribalism is pathetic at best.

I think it is fair to say that we have been brain washed to believing that everything Zuma does is corrupt. This is a world innovation and a businessman wants to market it to Zuma since the man is approachable and open to innovation. What is wrong with that? Is is because DA is not coming up with such innovations and all they know is to criticize the ANC and spread propaganda.

      mefi.boset.56 - 2012-12-19 19:07

Ag ja, now they cant event wipe their own behinds, they need solar! Ag f@k.

Oh, how delightful... Zapiro will have a field day with this one! Now please... can someone help me get the picture out of my head of Zuma on the loo? Eeeeuuuuu!!!!!

      MagdaKus - 2012-12-19 19:51

Guys- crit JZ when he does wrong, not when he does anything. The toilet is described as "composting toilet" on the manufacturer's website (Google it)- so in absence of evidence to the contrary- sustainable and good for the environment. Price tag is comparable to any upmarket loo's (no- not in my home ;-)

      peter.fraser.92754 - 2012-12-20 03:42

SO ZUMA BOUGHT TOILETS FROM THE SAME CROWD THAT DEMANDED THEIR MONEY BACK FOR THE 'SHAMBLED" R500000 PARTY !! INTERESTING !!

  • paulus.deboer.3 - 2012-12-19 18:11

Great .. the toilet bakes the excrement. Maybe they can bake them in brick shapes, and use the bricks to build Nkandla. Will be most appropriate.

  • makarapakaplan - 2012-12-19 18:13

Haai Zuma where are you going to fit these in Nkandla?, Shem

      debduplessis - 2012-12-19 18:18

doesnt exist .... "tenders" are only awarded to family members

      lacrimose.wolf - 2012-12-19 19:03

Interesting question. There was another man in the solar powered toilet business, who paid over the odds to sit at JZ's table a few days ago and was pretty grumpy that he didn't get breakfast. http://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/Politics/I-want-my-money-back-businessman-20121216. Same company? Or was this JZ's revenge? ;p

      rob.bancroft.94 - 2012-12-19 21:43

Yeah, he better make sure he gets paid first before he delivers the toilets, because if zoomer doesnt like them he might send them back, cr@p and all.

      lacrimose.wolf - 2012-12-19 22:15

Nothing ever gets sent back. They get redeployed as toll booths

      Alan - 2012-12-20 10:59

@ lacrimosewolf: Yes, same company. I bet Zuma believes he can bake the stuff as it exits him due to the vast amount of sunshine in his vicinity.

I was under impression that your next move is to get two to three wives for tax payers to feed them, or is that coming-up if you win 2014 elections? The embarrassment moment for me will be to put a cross on your head (face) during the erections sorry meant elections, in 2014!

  • sfiso.nsibande1 - 2012-12-19 19:42

As a matter of fact I will report this article to the editors forum..thi is the exactly the type of sensetionalize journalism which necessitated the protection of information bill..this article is misleading and any person who believes it...is basically insane.

      MagdaKus - 2012-12-19 20:05

The article's inoffensive- though I can see how someone could object to the user comments it provoked. In the interest of fairness, the reporter should have pointed out the ecological benefits of the product... But look- I think we South Africans should not take everything too seriously- particularly not this topic.

      sfiso.nsibande1 - 2012-12-19 21:35

MagdaKus this is the type of journalism which ANC will use in their defence in pass the protection of secret information bill..I have pointed this article to a few of south african national editors forum and 95% of them concur with me and already engaged the editor and press ombudsman and have already received a response from press ombudsman who are also engaging media 24..am not doing this for Jacob Zuma but for unbiased and fair news reporting which is paraded by SANEF..if it means I go to court to send this message accross I will.

      grace.andtruth.77 - 2012-12-19 22:56

Sfiso did you perhaps stick your head into one of these solar powered poo baking toilets? And NO most of us reading this article aren't insane, maybe this is a question you should ask yourself hmmmmm ???

      mshiniboys - 2012-12-20 06:25

      We are not your children.

      sfiso.nsibande1 - 2012-12-20 07:21

Any sane person would have seen just by reading the article that no sale occured as insunuated by this article, only an expression of interest of which is every person's right to excercise and Mr. Zuma that when they bring the toilet to him is for the seller and him to experiment/demonstrate and that doesnt amount to conclusion of sale, no contractual obligation were entered into as prescribed by this article.

      sfiso.nsibande1 - 2012-12-20 07:37
