Johannesburg - The North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria has permitted a Thaba Tshwane soldier to register all three of his customary marriages with the home affairs department, the Pretoria News reported on Tuesday.

Theophilus Thota, 51, said he and his wives had not registered their marriages in accordance with the Recognition of Customary Marriages Act as they did not know about the legislation.

The cut-off date for registration was 31 December 2010.

"We assumed that an affidavit by any one of us would be sufficient proof of the existence of the marriages," Thota was quoted as saying.

As an employee benefit, a wife of a soldier who was sent away from home on military duties was entitled to an allowance.

Once they have received marriage certificates, the women will all be able to receive the spousal benefits from the SA National Defence Force.

The three housewives have married in community of property and share a single home along with their children.
