Soldiers' bodies handed over to families

The bodies of 13 South Africa soldiers killed in the CAR have been handed over to their families in Pretoria.

Pretoria - The bodies of 13 South Africa soldiers killed in the Central African Republic were handed over to their families at the Waterkloof Air Force base in Pretoria on Thursday.

The soldiers were killed on Saturday in a clash with rebels in the outskirts of the CAR capital Bangui. Twenty seven others were wounded.

Soldiers formed a guard of honour to pay their last respects to their fallen colleagues as their coffins, wrapped in the national flag, were loaded into hearses.

The families identified them on Thursday and will decide whether they will be given full military funerals or private funerals.

Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and SANDF Chief Solly Shoke were expected to speak to the families.
