2012-06-06 11:27

Pretoria - A police sergeant was shot dead in front of his 10-year-old son in Hercules, Pretoria, Gauteng police said on Wednesday.

Captain Agnes Huma said two men attacked Sergeant Bruwer Smit and his son while they were out riding their mountain bikes in some veld near the Mabopane highway on Tuesday afternoon.

The attackers stole Smit's takkies and made off with both bicycles.

Smit died at the scene.

The boy escaped and ran to the highway where he flagged down a passing vehicle.

Brigadier Andre Wiese, Smit's commanding officer, told Beeld newspaper that Smit was one of the best police officers he had ever worked with.

A bright new day in sunny SA.

DEATH PENALTY for these pieces of garbage.

  • tricia.sutherland1 - 2012-06-06 11:46

killed for tekkies and bicycles? for South Africans this doesn't sound unusual - many stories like it. Young people hear the cr@p their parents speak at home, it instils hatred and no value for life - and then things like this happen. maybe i'm wrong - but these perpetrators are all too common among us. hectic story. a shame.

      jomardl - 2012-06-06 12:09

@ John -- This happens every single day in SA, though more frequently in the townships and not reported in the mainstream media. To highlight the crime problem, I think every single murder should be reported in the news.

      Koos - 2012-06-06 13:28

As I've said before: Black people alone have the voting power to create a better life for all. Do they hate the rest so much that they are prepared to sacrifice their own in their efforts to get rid of everyone else? Let's you think, doesn't it?

  • Amanda - 2012-06-06 11:54

shame poor boy ! how must he feel that he had to see hes dad got shot and die. so what's gone happen now minister of justice and PRESIDENT ZUMA TJIE. They dont give a damn.poor police man .

  • Dominique - 2012-06-06 11:54

They shouldnt get the death penalty they should be handed over to His loved ones and "friends" whom He worked with for His community and they deal with them! A bunch of barbarians!!!! He was on a bb group that my husband was on to help with crime related issues and then this happens to Him. RIP Smittie

  • Stille - 2012-06-06 12:09

Then i read the tripe about some stupid child complaining its all about race and people must get together and sing kumbayaa. BS. These "people" are animals and should be treated as such.

      Frankly - 2012-06-06 13:10

@JJ, maybe you should wake up and smell the coffee... You will forever be a criminal barbarian in some people's eyes simply because you are black, just like I will forever be a paw of the apartheid regime simply because I am white, even thought it was way before my time and I had absolutely F-All to do with it. Get it?

      Jacqui - 2012-06-06 13:29

JJ, I sometimes dream of all people marching to Parliament, showing that we as a nation cares. If the racists don't want to join, who who will miss them?.

      JJ - 2012-06-06 13:34

No Frankly, I don't blame you for fact I don't blame anything on apartheid. I was not there... So if your mindset is that you see people that way then that's just it...YOUR MINDSET. No one said keep quiet because you're white Stille, keep quiet if you're just blaming a race...let's solve crime rather than cause divisions. Like I said, i couldn't give a damn about your life otherwise but these are issues we can't solve without each other. Label me a "tree hugger" if you like.

      hopesibanyoni - 2012-06-06 14:07

Let's not put this on race,Rest in peace sir.Mr zuma if u can't bring back the death penalty come up with some painful punishment for murderes.

  • JJ - 2012-06-06 12:44

  • Mthobisi Ngema - 2012-06-06 12:53

  • rory.albertyn - 2012-06-06 12:56

Bruwer was not only a great cop and top class pool ref, he was a father of note. His last moments were at least spending time with his son. We will miss you Bruwer, God speed. To the criminals who got away 'for now', the wheel turns and ultimately, you will answer to the Lord. Revenge is his and it will be like an iron rod.

  • Pixi3kid - 2012-06-06 13:12

Oh God help us all! why are we back to Race again? a man died infront of his kid and the first thing that gets jumped to is race! pienk, yellow whatever the colour... some people just think they can do whatever they want-no matter what the colour. my thoughts are with the family and the poor child and his mother, his poor poor mother that will have to sit and deal with effects of this attack! Her kid will never be the same again and no matter what she says or how hard she try's, she will never be able to heal her sons hurt or her own for that matter!

      Rob - 2012-06-06 13:19

White man-Black killers. Yep. I'd say it involves race. If it was the other way round, there would be hundreds of comments & blacks playing the race card. Not so ? Yes !

      Pixi3kid - 2012-06-07 08:20

But blacks are dying at the hands of blacks as well. No so?

      Rob - 2012-06-07 09:30

But not @ the hands of whites. Not so !

  • jeandre.welgemoed - 2012-06-06 13:18

  • Willem Jacobs - 2012-06-06 13:35

I know black people that is good people. the persons that this officer left parentless was because he was doing his job and they were criminals. Doing crime. Its barbaric to kill an un armed person not resisting because he had his son with him. Cowards. Simpathy for the familly

  • Adgjm - 2012-06-06 13:40

Just hope that idiot never x my path! You'll be dearly missed. Let's stop worrying about a simple drawing and rather concentrate on this useless killings!

  • Dominique - 2012-06-06 14:50

From the people that knew Him, RACE was NEVER an issue. Be you black, white, purple, brown or pink if you are a criminal you are a criminal. Blaming anything He did on race or "apartheid" is utter crap!!!! He did what He could to remotely try and save His country and He was "bitten in the back". Guarenteed He was on another criminals tail and they decided to take Him out in front of His child. Nothing can ever repair what this child has seen, I only pray that God comforts Him in this time and for the people with all their negative racial comments I pray that God mends your mind cause we dont need people like you in this country that we are trying to make a better place.

  • roslyn.edwards.16 - 2012-06-06 15:52

I was at pretoria police in 1998 and recieved my training with sergeant smith. We were in the same platoon. We shared one baracksroom 4 six months. We went 2 maleoskop after our basictraining and finished swat. He was a good person, a good friend and a formidable police officer. My hart goes out 2 his family and friends. He will always be larger than live. May God grant u peace in this hard time. He was a good man. Sgt MJ Lucas- Upington SAPS

  • sandy.m.roman2 - 2012-06-07 07:50

He trained at Police College with my son in 1998. By all accounts he was a good Police officer, but that brings little comfort to his family.

  • Pieter - 2012-06-07 14:31
