South Africans killed in Kabul blast

2012-09-18 10:05

Pretoria - Eight South Africans died in a suicide bomb attack which killed 12 in Kabul in Afghanistan on Tuesday morning, the department of international relations and co-operation has confirmed.

"Our mission in Islamabad in Pakistan, which is also accredited in Afghanistan, has informed us that eight South Africans were among the dead in the explosion which occurred in Kabul early this morning," foreign affairs spokesperson Nelson Kgwete told AFP.

"They worked for a private aviation company," he added.

The group were all believed to be men, Kgwete said.

"Our mission in Islamabad is working on the identity of the men and contacting their next of kin."

Tuesday's attack by a woman suicide bomber was the deadliest single attack claimed to avenge a US film that has sparked a week of bloody protests across the Muslim world.

More than 30 people have now been killed in the violent backlash over a YouTube trailer for the film Innocence of Muslims.

Muslims in those areas are becoming more stupid and you don't wan't to find yourself in their madness. peter.beltingser - 2012-09-19 10:26

REALLY, they HAVE to go find work in what is basically a war zone because of EE. Pull the other one will you. I know many people who had good jobs in SA who left either permanently or for a couple of years to experience something different and to see the world. Unemployment is high in SA, but the unemployment rate among white South Africans are by far the lowest compared to other groups. It currently stands at 6.8 % which is comparable to many 1st world countries. The closest is Indian, which stands at 12%. So please don't use EE or AA as a scapegoat

  • smalefane - 2012-09-18 10:15

Islamist extremists!!! It is time for the Islam community to come out strong and condemn these senseless killings. They need to start showing us that theirs is a religion of peace as claim it to be.

      ebrahim.floris.7 - 2012-09-18 10:33

I don't know where these suicide bombers get their info, as far as I know suicide is forbidden and killing no matter in which way is murder and also forbidden in islam so everyone calling islam a cancer and a cult etc, u need to rethink ur words, cos these are strange people doing wrong things to give us a bad name. Its stereotyping coz islam does not allow for all these merciless killings and bombings.

      faerrab - 2012-09-18 10:48

They will after the West gets out of muslim countries and stops killing millions of muslims and to stop stealling their oil

      cameronrh1 - 2012-09-18 10:50

@fatima not when the religion has declared Jihad on the infidels (non-believers of Islam)

      ebrahim.floris.7 - 2012-09-18 11:33

Amanda and Victor,I kindly request you to read Goodstuff's comment below. It is extremely unfortunate that people tend to use Islam as an excuse to carry out these ghastly acts and as I've said before we cannot blame anyone but ourselves for the view that is being portrayed of Islam(for many many years),but the damage that has already been done by many "religious" militant groups and this will always overshadow the good that has also been done in other quarters. @Fathima,unfortunately the "stereotyping" only comes about after compounding reports of "Islamic violence" and maybe will never change, but that does not mean that we should not endevour to try!

      Madhi - 2012-09-18 17:19

I agree smalefane muslims need to comeout and condemn violence and senseless killings. Some like myself want to do it but we get discouraged when we ask ourselves whether that will achieve the objectives or not, given islamophibia in the world. It's almost asking good white South Africans to condemn racism and expect victims of white racims will believe them. So its hard, islamophobia drives everyone to the extreme unfortunately, just like BEE/AA is driving every white person to the right in my view, or every poor black person to malema.

      james.peterson.14289210 - 2012-09-18 18:53

so you want to know where the moderate moooslims of the world are?? they where right there at the attack .. cheering on and bringing death to innocents. No such thing as moderate muslims and no such thing as a peaceful muslim, they are sworn to destroy the west. OPEN your eyes!! Hezb-e-Islami, an insurgent group that has traditionally been among the more moderate organizations in Afghanistan, claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was in retaliation for the anti-Islam film trailer onYouTube that sparked demonstrations throughout the Middle East and Africa. “In the operation in reaction to the disrespect of the holy prophet, 16 American spies were killed today in Kabul,” said the group in an official statement. Insurgent groups often overestimate the death toll of such attacks and misstate the nationality and profession of those killed.

      Mike - 2012-09-18 22:34

@fatima its only murder when a muslim kills another muslim. muslims killing an infedel is praised in islamic countries. maybe you should read your koran there are more than 500 verses to kill the fafir.

Men use religion, fear or ignorance in their pursuit for power all of the Stans (Pakistan, Afghatistan. Kazakstan, Tjikistan)have oil and gas reserves which is what the West is after as they did in Iraq , Libya, Sudan and soon Iran

      Goodstuff - 2012-09-18 11:14

So no wars, murders or wicked deeds have been commited due to greed? The very military force now occupying Afganistan is there because of the greed of the Bush's. What about the Anglo Boere war, it was about the diamonds, the gold of SA that made the Brittish invade South Africa! THe crusades in themselves were about wealth, Europe was impoverished, the east held riches, spice etc. The crusades were just a wicked twisiting of the truth. No, what is the route of all evil is evil itself. Blaming religion is just an easy option.

      arthur.hugh - 2012-09-18 11:30

Money and power is the root of it, religion is used to incite the masses and used as an excuse through factions and division. Granted, the bombings are religious in nature, but in the background who comes up trumps? The guys making money.

      allcoveredinNinjas - 2012-09-18 12:11

Absolute bollucks , the military force in Afganistan is there because it was a failed state in the hands of Religous terror advocates sponsoring attacks on the US and growing 90% of the worlds heroine. The US balance sheet reflects this . The crusades were launched becausethe Seljuk Turks decisively defeated the Byzantine army in 1071 and cut off Christian access to Jerusalem as well as the destruction of many Christian sacred sites and the persecution of Christians under the Fatimid caliph Al-Hakim.They didn't just set out for the riches of a hot dry desert . Religion is all about power and money , power of the people and money to finance themselves and build their oddly decadent holy sites and places of worship , sending 'missionaries' to convert more people , more people more power and more money.

@hudayfah.newman - I am saying exactly what I meant: As scientists, we have THEORIES. When they are PROVEN, they become FACTS. Let's see how this works for you: GOD is a THEORY, and until is PROVEN that HE EXISTS, GOD remains a THEORY!!! We will NEVER go out of our way to prove that he exists...or he does not exist. GOD is YOUR THEORY - prove it to it can become a FACT! The BIG BANG is a THEORY, and until PROVEN it REMAINS a THEORY! I will NOT put a bomb or a gun to your head to make you believe in the BIG BANG THEORY! Does this work for you?

      wolf.cilliers - 2012-09-18 16:36

It may not be the case with other religions and scientism (as opposed to rational scientific endeavor) but as Christians we need proof and facts as well – but we don’t need to know all the answers before we could believe in a meaningful and rational way (and not in a rationalistic or irrational way) and to have a consistent world view. We need sufficient answers to the relevant answers and issues in life, not exhaustive answers. As for the rest of the answers for which we still don’t have answers we have to believe and trust God – we are in a time frame in the universe’s history where God desires that we trust Him. Science also will never prove everything and all scientists (Christian and otherwise) still operates on faith and trust – perhaps not in a strict religious sense always but there are many aspects in daily life where one have to believe and trust in order to operate and live a normal life. Why? If one don’t have all the proof and facts concerning everything one is involved in you come to a stage (most often unknowing or subconsciously) where you have to believe and trust. This is true in everyday life as well and (even a bit more I think) in the religious sphere which dictates the physical in any case. Therefore we have to make sure that our religious and world view sets of truths and norms are the correct ones. Please watch out – the evil forces are out to deceive under the guise of so-called truth and so try to lead us into falsehood and eventual misery.

      cameronrh1 - 2012-09-19 13:00

@mihaip, and if you knew your Bible you would know Chrsitianity and science co-exist.

Profanity and indiscretion by a few is what causes such insanity amongst the extremist of a peaceful religion. As it was put by a fellow Muslim, it is Sam Bacile that should face up to his actions and not pick a fight and go into hiding. The suicide booming is senseless since those that were killed had nothing to do with the making of this film. The question would be; Did Sam Bacile not anticipate this reaction when marking this film by inciting mayham which leed madmen that commits acts that have nothing to do with the teachings of Islam?

      Heibrin - 2012-09-18 12:18

@riad: no matter what he did or did not anticipate, civilized people do NOT kill others for a difference in opinion.

      thomas.paine.946517 - 2012-09-18 12:19

Riad, if these acts have nothing to do with the teachings of Islam then is it just pure coincidence that almost all acts of terror of this nature are committed by Muslims? This argument of "no true Mulsim" is starting to wear a bit thin. What is it about your religion that creates an environment where this type of lunacy can proliferate? Rather than claiming that you are part of a completely peaceful religion, why do the "peaceful" muslims of this world not rise up and denounce the zealots who rule so much of the islamic world?

Of course no real religion - Christian or Muslim would ever condone this and are organizations of peace and love...we too easily categories every one into the same general group...Don't be so gullible & if you don't know what you are talking about...rather don't incite more hate speech as you only add fuel to the fire.

Sorry Mike but it is bad and false religions that poisons things. Whether you like it or not you have to take into account evil agents (spiritual such as Satan and his demonic forces, as well as their human co-workers) in this world and their ability to even create false religions for their purposes. And just because some people suffer in bad marriages we cannot say that all marriages cause everybody to suffer. Just because ppl are injured and die in car accidents we cannot say that cars are bad (or poisonous).

They won't target Americans cos they want Obama to win this years election. And they want Obama to win cos he's fond of giving em money. Like the billion dollars he gave to the muslim brotherhood. Romney, as big an idiot as he is, is not a friend to the extremists.

so you want to know where the moderate moooslims of the world are?? they where right there at the attack .. cheering on and bringing death to innocents.

It's NOT a US film, get your facts right! It's a You Tube film made by some Islamic fundamentalist. Have you seen it? Rather funny, slapstick if you will. How this film sparks all the outrage is beyond my comprehension.

some idiot makes a video and the Muslims of the world take revenge on all Christians and no Muslims will say anything to condemn these maniacs. If Muslims do not condemn these radicals they are just as guilty and then should accept that the non Muslim world will condemn all Muslims
