Sowetan acting editor steps down

2011-08-03 19:39

Cape Town - The acting editor of the Sowetan newspaper, Len Maseko, stepped down from the position on Wednesday.

The newspaper is at the centre of a furore over a column by Eric Miyeni, in which City Press editor Ferial Haffajee was described as "a black snake in the grass, deployed by white capital to sow discord among blacks".

He added that "in the 80s she'd probably have had a burning tyre around her neck".

Miyeni has since been canned as columnist.

Maseko said as the column had been printed "on his watch", he accepted responsibility.

An investigation into why the column slipped through the cracks has been launched, with possible disciplinary steps being taken, the publisher of the Sowetan, Justice Malala, told News24 on Wednesday.

He told News24 that Mpumelelo Mkhabela had since been appointed editor of the newspaper.

      THE.SRG - 2011-08-03 19:43

Maseko said as the column had been printed "on his watch", and he accepted responsibility.

      Nongoloza - 2011-08-03 20:14

I agree, Maseko has balls. As for miyeni, he is a black racist, like many other blacks in this country.

At long last... someone who's prepared to take responsibility for his/her actions/inactions. This is a milestone for South Africa; let's hope our politicians take note.

      Aish - 2011-08-03 21:52

BIG up to you Len, I hope another paper takes someone with your integrity on board. I wish the ANCYL and ANC would learn a lesson in responsibility and accountability.

  • RealSouthAfrican - 2011-08-03 19:44

Honorable thing to have done. Takes responsibility like a champ. Few of our esteemed leaders should take notes! Eric, you can shut up now.

      THE.SRG - 2011-08-03 19:48

now he has f all to cry about...just got snubbed in a big way by a real man,not a crying little baby!

      Azazel - 2011-08-03 20:01

If the ANC had any honour in them, 3/4 of them would have to step down including fatboy Zuma for his 100+ charges that were against him.

  • Macho Mike - 2011-08-03 19:46

Len, you are a man amongst many cowards. Many ANC fat cats should learn from someone as honourable as you. Wish you well in the future.

      Man.Dumisani - 2011-08-03 19:55

The ANC have no honour, they are now ruled by their Youth League, Malema and Floyd are the presidents of SA. Pathetic ANC, they have NO character anymore !!!

  • Steven Gains - 2011-08-03 19:53

Well...refreshing to see top guy taking full responsibility. I commend you Mr. Maseko.

  • GH - 2011-08-03 19:56

I'm confused. Someone actually stepped down because he was wrong. Now I want to promote the guy. A guy with honour. Very rare these days.

      Phaedioux - 2011-08-03 20:04

He probably trusted Miyeni who broke his trust by submitting the article knowing that it would be printed/published unchecked. This is the way of some dishonourable people - now Miyeni is calling for other people to be fired because of his wrongdoing!

      ewald - 2011-08-03 20:27

LOL you right, somehow he deserves to be rewarded for this! Our country one of irreconcilable ironies.

  • Phaedioux - 2011-08-03 19:59

I hope they find another position for this honourable man! It would really be a pity to see someone with integrity becoming unemployed.

Funny that News24 says the column was printed in Len's watch while sowetan says Len was on leave so which is which here? who is fooling who in the zoo people i still think Mondli should be joing them in the firing line Eric,Len and Mondli they should all go go go

  • Lab-Rat - 2011-08-03 20:03

And who would have thought. The ethics we were supposed to see from our government has been shown by our media instead.

  • Chris - 2011-08-03 20:27

Personally I think Len should have stayed on. The attitude/character of Eric was blown wide open - Eric, and people like him, should not work at any newspaper, or for that matter at any place other than the ANC Youth League.

  • kolobe - 2011-08-03 20:36

this is bad, about time blacks run their own media house. why is mondli getting promotions when everybody else is getting fired?Ferial Haffajee is clearly a snake

      THE.SRG - 2011-08-03 20:39

go spit your venom elsewhere must be the biggest troll ive seen here!

      THE.SRG - 2011-08-03 20:42

The man stepped down... didn't get fired...he is a real black man, unlike you!

      RealSouthAfrican - 2011-08-03 20:57

Why don't Blacks start their own media house instead of wanting to take over the functioning and successful white guys? Kolobe, go work for the New Age, they will tell you the news you want to hear...
