Spate of rapes in North West

2012-04-28 17:55

Johannesburg - A man was arrested on Saturday for raping a woman at a Taung graveyard, North West police said.

He and another man had robbed the 23-year-old woman and her aunt at 02:30 on Saturday, said Brigadier Thulane Ngubane.

They allegedly took money and cellphones and fled, but later confronted the same woman and her aunt who were walking in the street.

The younger woman was dragged to a graveyard where she was raped. Her aunt managed to escape.

Woman gang raped

In a separate incident, a 31-year-old woman was gang raped, also in Taung, by three men on Saturday.

"According to the information... the victim was asleep with her boyfriend when five suspects entered the house," said Ngubane.

The boyfriend was assaulted and tied up before three of the intruders raped the woman.

Two cellphones, shoes and groceries were taken from the house.

Police are investigating a case of house robbery and rape. No arrests have been made.

In a third separate incident, a 22-year-old woman was raped by her 17-year-old cousin on Friday in the Utlwanang township outside Christiana.

Man rapes male cousin

Ngubane said the woman was asleep when the cousin raped her.
He was later arrested by police.

In another similar incident in Ikakeng, a 30-year-old man was arrested for raping his 17-year-old cousin on Friday.

Ngubane said the incident happened at the Top City informal settlement.

It is alleged that the two were sleeping in a shack when the man raped the boy.

The man has been arrested and is due to appear in court.

And then I am asked why I am sad and negative! These poor victims, they deserve so much better than this.

      Gestoffle - 2012-04-28 20:35

This is another shocker.... I wonder if this victim is ever going to ask herself whether her government is doing enough to protect her. "when the cousin raped her" FFS! If you cant trust family, who the fork can you trust? Oh well, keep in the family then...if you a savage.

Cry my Beloved Country-- What is happening---Rape of Women and children, now young boys also, murder corruption. What has the goverment done but encouraged this by turning the criminals free and teaches by example with its own people on how crime does pay and suspended with full pay if you get caught, go to jail and get out soon to play golf-- Somthing is sadly wrong in our beloved country.

  • Mike Purchase - 2012-04-28 18:38

south africa has lost morality! Most men are on rape rampage, they can't respect anything that has a female organ.the governmet is quiet and makes me convinced that rape doesn't bother anybody

  • Melanie - 2012-04-28 20:03

i am no more proudly south african because my fellow women are raped day and night. South african men are painted evil, even those that are good, we no longer value having men in our community because they rape anything that is a living being. Shame, this country is declared 'rape' nation

Its high time such animals are sent to hell by firing squads or public beheadings.

  • kobus.jansenvanvuuren - 2012-04-29 07:19

All I am saying is 02:30.....

      kobus.jansenvanvuuren - 2012-04-29 07:37

@Leonard - Second paragraph - "He and another man had robbed the 23-year-old woman and her aunt at 02:30 on Saturday, said Brigadier Thulane Ngubane." What on earth were these ladies doing out at 02:30.. I can't get over this!!

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-04-29 11:57

Good point Kobus, and then after being robbed they were still out on the streets! Certainly not brain surgeons, it casts doubt on their case if it ever gets to court. I'm already doubting the full truth is being told..

      Mya - 2012-04-29 12:44

and here we go, some cavemen always looking to blame the victims. So anyone out after midnight should be raped? Maybe they were walking home from work, the hospital, visiting family etc. Maybe they were still walking home after being robbed and the basta.rds came back for them. Always cavemen looking to justify rape. Shame on you guys.

      Jacqui - 2012-04-29 13:32

Kobus, the women should be safe to walk the streets no matter what the time is.

      kobus.jansenvanvuuren - 2012-04-29 15:02

can people really be this shallow... Yes how awesome would it be to walk the streets after 12:00. But you have to remember we are in South Africa.. the rape capital off the world.. you don't do that.. and call me a cavemen if you wish.. but the truth is if you are going to walk the streets that time off night you can bet your ass something will happen. and one more thing - Should the rapist ask before raping.. 'dear, are you coming from work, hospital or visiting family because if you are I will exempt you from my sick thoughts.

      Mya - 2012-04-29 16:26

These people don't have choices. They don't have the luxury of having their own cars, cushy jobs or comfy working hours. Even if they were coming home from the pub, who cares. You trivialize what has happened with your comments. Why blame the victim? Why not make a comment against the rapists? You drive your car at night? Why? You know you could be hijacked? Yet you still do it? Why even have a car if the risk of being hijacked is out there? Stop blaming the victims, start campaigning against the criminals.

      kobus.jansenvanvuuren - 2012-04-29 18:18

@Mya - You see.. I am one of those people not having my own car.. and yet I choose not to walk the streets at night for my own safety. yes I want to walk to the garage and buy me milk for my coffee but I have common sense not to do so... You choose your own future my dear.. you have no idea what's going on in the real world.. wake up!!! have they mentioned once that these people didn't have cars? Crime is a fact in SA and yet you choose to oversee that the victim was also in the wrong. I am not picking on the victim, but can they really be so naive to think that two ladies would be save at 02:30 in the street?

this whole thing is outrageous, politicians are sitting comfortably with bodyguards and all, while the citizens have to suffer, its pathetic

      Jacqui - 2012-04-29 13:33

Pumela, remember that when you have to vote again.
