Johannesburg - ANC stalwart Ruth Mompati, who died earlier this week, will receive a special official funeral, the presidency announced on Wednesday.

"This category of a funeral is designated by the President of the Republic of South Africa for distinguished persons," spokesperson Harold Maloka said in a statement.

"All national flags at all flag stations in the country will be flown at half-mast from today [Wednesday], May 13 2015 until the day of the funeral."

The details of the funeral would be communicated once finalised.

The 89-year-old politician died in the early hours of Tuesday morning following a lengthy illness.

Mompati had joined the struggle when she was a young woman and continued to serve her country until the very last days, the ANC said following the news of her death.

She had a huge legacy within the political sphere, having worked beside the late former president Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo in their law practice between 1953 and 1961.

She joined the ANC in 1954 and was elected to the National Executive Committee of the Women's League.

She was involved in the Defiance Campaign and went on to be a founding member of the Federation of SA Women.
