Johannesburg - A special synod of the Reformed Church in South Africa will decide whether women will be allowed at the helm of the church, Network24 reported.

Fifty-six men, made up of four ministers and four elders from each of the seven regional synods, would make up the special synod, after a general synod, being held until 15 January, was divided on the matter.

The smaller synod would decide if women would be able to serve in church as elders or ministers.

The general synod, meeting in Potchefstroom, referred the matter to the special synod on Friday.

On Wednesday, Beeld reported that the church was divided over whether women should minister in the church.

"There are people in the synod that pray a woman never stands at the pulpit. And so are there people that pray that a woman does stand there," Reverend Sarel Cilliers, from the Waterberg congregation, was quoted as saying.
