Johannesburg - The Western Cape provincial government on Tuesday denied that one of its MECs had been arrested for speeding along the N1 South in Midrand.

Western Cape Transport MEC Donald Grant said there was "absolutely no truth" to the reports.

Johannesburg metro police said the man was caught driving at 207km/h in a 120km/h zone in the early hours of Sunday morning.

"The fact of the matter is, the man arrested claimed to be an MEC of the Western Cape," said spokesperson Wayne Minnaar.

The man had failed to stop for the metro police officers who had to chase him and cut him off in his gold Bentley on Corlett Drive, Minnaar said.

According to Eyewitness News mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith, said the speedster was a well-known businessman and was not connected to the Western Cape.

Smith told News24 that the man was in fact from the Eastern Cape.

He was arrested and charged with reckless and negligent driving and later released on R1 500 bail.

The man was scheduled to appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
