Speeding bikers' plans come to naught

2013-02-03 21:44

Johannesburg - Three motorcyclists and five motorists were arrested for allegedly speeding on the N1-south highway near the Maraisburg off-ramp on Sunday, Johannesburg Metro police said.

The three motor cyclists had no rear registration number plates to avoid being captured by cameras, said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

"However, their tricks did not work this time around because they were physically arrested by our high speed unit," said Minnaar.

All eight were caught speeding between 165km/h and 220km/h.

They will appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on Monday to face speeding charges.

honestly speaking, the Gov should increase speed limits to 140 for cars and 180 for bikes. Not fair for bike to go 120 all the way.

      BatRMan959 - 2013-02-04 14:39

A working brain gathers no Moss...

      christopher.cousens - 2013-02-25 12:20

You obviously don't have a clue what you're talking about!! A bike's stopping distance is a lot longer than a car's yet you think a bike should be permitted to go faster than a car? There's no brain behind that comment at all! The way bikes ride around cars is completely ridiculous, they have no more rights than a car and something that small can certainly not EXPECT a car to move out of their way. If I'm walking around heavy machinery, I take care not to get it its way, not the other way around! The motto should never be "Think Bike", it should be "Think, Bike".

I do travel on that road often, n these bikers hav attitudes like they own the road, overtake U on a solid line, literally push U aside for them to ovatake, som of them lov showin U the finger, but one day IS one day, these harley gys r gonna regret it...

      anthony.richardson.961 - 2013-02-04 00:54

At those speeds, doubt it was a Harley!

      Sarel Brits - 2013-02-04 05:58

Dude!!! how slow do you have to go to get overtaken by Harly's? May be you should go a bit faster.

      thechrisberryshow - 2013-02-04 08:00

I ride a Harley, I'm slow as balls on the highway, rarely hitting 120.....also pls not that riding on dotted lines between vehicles on a bike is actually legal according the road act. See "lane splitting". If the biker did so on a solid line, he is retarded and needs to stop doing breaking the road rules before he breaks his neck

  • Khomotso D Maake - 2013-02-04 00:16

By the way, why must motorists 'Think Bike' when bikers can't think in the 1st place...they break the traffic Act, speed excessively, overtake on barrier lane, squeeze in between cars on usually narrow two lane roads where speed limited at 60km/h...the sin list is endless.

      david.luis.9822924 - 2013-02-04 06:50

Khotsomo, 1. flitering (or as you call it squeezing) between lanes with a bike is LEGAL in SA. 2. you should actually be glad for each bike you see on the road, it means there is one car less, and that helps to reduce congestion. 3. you should "think bike" so you can live happily and never have to say to someone "sorry, I did not see you" after you have hit a person who was driving a bike (wearing a very bright yellow reflective vest and having a bright light on). As for speeding excessively and driving without number plates I still think that there are more car drivers that do this than bikers. as you say, the list of sins (committed by car drivers AS WELL) is endless. - 2013-02-04 09:44

Khomotso let us look at the amount of motorists who on a daily basis break the traffic rules. They don't stop at four way stops, skip robots, go over yellow barrier lines when there is sufficient areas to move before just to name a few examples. People say taxi drivers are worse on the roads, I have yet to come across a taxi that breaks the rules as much as motorists. Yes there are bikers who are at fault but take the splinter out of your eye before condeming bikers. EVERYDODY NEEDS TO SHOW SOME RESPECT TO THEMSELVES AND TO OTHER COMMUTERS ON THE ROAD BEFORE MAKING THE COMMENTS AS POSTED ON THESE PAGES.

Well done Wayne, now all hands on deck to bring the Taxi Drivers to book !

  • michael.kleber.376 - 2013-02-04 07:55

This is the result of the govt not respecting the law , ordinary citizens start doing the same

  • terrence.naicker.1 - 2013-02-04 08:19

I respect any man that takes his life in his hands every time he gets on his bike. A pity a few jackasses spoil it for the majority. Just a quick question for those in the know , is it legal to lane straddle through moving traffic or is it only legal through standing traffic ?

      Sarel Brits - 2013-02-04 08:40

Not for bikes, It use to be a while ago

  • ecoetzer - 2013-02-04 08:43

Stop blaming the bikes, read the article again. FIVE Motorists were caught and only THREE Motorcycles. One is not more wrong than the other. If you speed you break the law.

      tienmingc - 2013-02-04 11:23

Ummm. Please compare the ratio of actual cars to bikes on the roads. There is normally only 1 bike to around 10-20 cars on highways. 3 - 5 is a huge ratio.

  • warwick.railton.7 - 2013-02-04 09:23

Bob - try me you coward

      Bob - 2013-02-04 11:03

      Okay I'm trying... now what?

  • jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2013-02-04 09:25

Good, let them pay and pay. Bloody hooligans.

  • johan.syffert - 2013-02-04 09:42

And yet its ok for some petty goverment offical to fly down the highway with he's bmw and police escort. Shouldn't the law count the same for everyone?

  • daniel.rossouw1 - 2013-02-04 11:51

Only way is to get tough. At speeds over say 170kmph car/bike must be impounded there and then. Taken to a scrap yard and crushed. See how long they'll keep speeding.

  • - 2013-02-04 13:42

caught at 220km/h, what were they on vespas?

      pjbadenhorst - 2013-02-04 14:46

Its common knowledge that even a vespa can be overloaded and that at that speed an overloaded vespa is just as deadly as any superbike.

  • daniel.rossouw1 - 2013-02-04 13:52

So most of you are for lawbreaking if I look at the responses. Then you're for killing farmers, raping elderly women, and molesting kids as well. If not you're a bunch of hypocrites.

      chrisX - 2013-02-04 14:54

Straw-man alert! You can't compare breaking the speed limit with murder, that's like comparing skydiving with suicide, it's about intent....

  • beukesce - 2013-02-25 08:21

    THINK , BIKE !

  • mcfall24 - 2013-02-25 08:51

how is possible that this stupid headline is only about the riders and not the FIVE motorists that were ALSO arrested....
