Johannesburg - A lot has been written and said about the spy cable leaks. Here’s a quick guide to the things worth knowing, according to City Press:

- The cables include documents from various intelligence agencies across the world, including South Africa. Experts say, though, they likely come from one source.

- Former spooks agree that the damage to South Africa’s intelligence agencies amount to nothing more than embarrassment in the short term because of the fact that secret documents had been leaked.

- If names of operatives and their handlers hadn’t been blacked out, they say the damage might have been more serious.

- Another former operative, however, said the State Security Agency wasn’t that big and even though names had been blacked out, some of the agents could possibly be identified on the basis of the information in the documents.

- The information in the cables is “human intelligence”, and is considered to be more humdrum than “electronic signals intelligence”, which include phone tapping.
