St Francis Bay fire claims already at R30m

Port Elizabeth - Financial services provider Alexander Forbes has already received claims of R30m for property damaged in the devastating St Francis Bay fire.

Eyewitness News reported that 76 properties were destroyed in the huge fire in the coastal resort town on Sunday evening.

A spokesperson for Alexander Forbes said claims were streaming in.

“We currently estimate about R30m [in damages] just from total losses of some household content,” said Colin Mchunu.

Another devastating side-effect of the fire is the loss of income for many.

A housekeeper, Denise Stuurman, said the home of her and her children burned to the ground and she is now out of a job.

She said the incident could not have come at a worse time as Christmas is only weeks away.

Two firefighters were admitted to hospital with injuries sustained in the fire.

Fortunately the labour law will protect Denise Stuurman as her employer has an obligation to either continue paying her or retrenching her, and a retrenchment would mean a payout, depending on her length of employment.
