Cape Town – The State Security Agency was on Monday evening keeping its cards close to its chest about the leak of documents that revealed some damning allegations about its operations over the years.

“We are aware of the latest development,” the agency’s spokesperson Brian Dube told News24.

But Dube would not say when the agency became aware of the leak or where it came from.

He would not even say if there would be a probe into the leak.

On Monday news organisation Al Jazeera announced that it was in possession of leaked documents from SSA operatives showing how South Africa became vulnerable to foreign espionage after the end of apartheid.

One cable reveals how South African spies covered up the theft of weapons plans by Israel.

Another shows how concerns have been raised within the SSA about efforts by Iran to use secret front companies to beat western-imposed sanctions.

According to Al Jazeera the cable also exposes how Iran approached the South African government to avoid international sanctions imposed by the West.
