Cape Town - The State on Tuesday opposed applications by 28’s gang leader George ‘Geweld’ Thomas and 14 co-accused for leave to appeal their convictions and/or sentences.

Prosecutor Willie Viljoen spent the day taking Western Cape High Court Judge Chantel Fortuin through bundles of evidence, trying to show her why the applications should not be granted.

Lawyers for 15 of the men had spent Monday and the first part of Tuesday morning trying to convince the court that it had often relied on ‘unreliable’ state witnesses in coming to its findings.

Thomas was appealing both his conviction and sentence.

He was sentenced at the start of the month to a life term for each of the seven murders he was found guilty of. He received various other sentences for 52 charges including racketeering and attempted murder.

It was expected that the State would on Wednesday bring an application for leave to appeal some of Thomas’s sentences, as well as those of five others.
