Cape Town - Democratic Alliance chief whip John Steenhuisen will not stand for the position of party leader, he said on Sunday.

When asked if he would be throwing his hat into the ring, Steenhuisen said: "Absolutely not".

"But if Mmusi Maimane stands I will support him 100%," he told News24.

Earlier, Zille announced that she would not stand for re-election at next month's federal congress in Port Elizabeth.

However, Maimane, who many have speculated will take Zille's place as head of the party, would not comment on whether he would stand for the position.

Asked whether he knew before the time that Zille was bowing out, Steenhuisen said no.

"I'm not a member of the executive."

He said he heard for the first time when the announcement was made on Sunday.
