Steenkamp shot through bathroom door

2013-02-15 08:31

Johannesburg - The Valentine's Day murder at paralympian Oscar Pistorius's house in Pretoria dominated newspaper front pages on Friday morning, overshadowing President Jacob Zuma's opening of Parliament.

A few hours after Zuma's annual state-of-the-nation address on Thursday evening, the head of state failed to make the front page of most newspapers.

Speculation was rife over Pistorius's alleged shooting of his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Beeld newspaper dedicated five full pages to the story, with its front page story, headlined "Dood agter deur [Dead behind door]", saying it understood Steenkamp was shot four times through a bathroom door.

According to the paper the police and security guards were called to his house about two hours before the shooting, after neighbours heard him and Steenkamp argue.

The police were called out a second time around 03:00 after neighbours heard gunshots, reported Beeld, quoting an unnamed Silver Woods estate resident.

Police informant

A resident said her body was found in the bathroom. Steenkamp apparently was shot four times:  in the head, chest, pelvis and hand.

Beeld explained its initial report, that the shooting was an accident, had come from police Captain Sarah Mcira, who released the information to their journalist around 08:00 on Thursday.

Another police spokesperson later said that information came as a surprise.

"The SA Police Service were just as surprised... to hear on the radio that allegations had been made that the deceased had been perceived to be a burglar," police spokesperson Brigadier Denise Beukes said.

"We were very surprised, and those allegations did not come from us."

Beukes's comments that there had been "previous incidents of a domestic nature at his place" were widely reported on.

The Star newspaper cited sources saying Steenkamp's body was found downstairs in the entrance hall of his R3.9m house.

The Star dedicated its editorial opinion to domestic violence.

Headlines

The Times newspaper said a "highly skilled team of blood-spatter forensic specialists" would fine-comb Pistorius's house on Friday morning.

The Citizen's front page headline was "Blade gunner?", while the Daily Sun reported on "Oscar's bloody Valentine!", and the Sowetan headlined its front page report "Golden boy loses shine".

The New Age newspaper led with Steenkamp's death, saying it had a copy of a speech Steenkamp had prepared to deliver on Valentine's Day at a high school in Sandton.

The New Age reported on Zuma's speech at the bottom of its front page.

Business Day was the only daily to lead with Zuma, reporting on tax policies in mining.

As Zuma started his speech at 19:00 on Thursday, 24-hour news channel eNCA featured a special report on Pistorius's saga, referring viewers to their sister e.tv channel if they wanted to follow the president's speech.

This actually makes the whole Lance Armstrong scandal seem so lame. What is it with these sports start continuously letting everybody down? No one would have said something bad about the golden boy last time this week... you would have been burned by the public if you came out to claim Oscar was an unsavory character. Unfortunately for him there are too many reports and claims regarding his aggression problem. And he chose a VERY bad time in SA's history to commit an act of violence against a woman. Same as for the rapists - bring back the death penalty - he deserves it as much as the guys in Bredasdorp (If found guilty)

One of the scenarios based on the current info - She came in late. There was a fight (perhaps due to some sort of flirting, or some relationship issues - based on past domestic-related reports of violence). He then become aggressive, and she retreated in the bathroom. He probably hit the door a few times, and she was right behind the door. Perhaps frightened and with the fact that alcohol still in her system from the past night's entertainment, she must have forgotten her mobile to call a friend or someone in her help. Then he must have gone and take his gun. Out of rage, he must have shot a the door a few times. In his state of mind, either to scare her thinking she may not be right behind the door, or actually with the intent of hurting her if not even kill her. People can say what they want, but the facts presented so far lend themselves into this direction of events. The fact remains - he is alive, she is not due to his shooting at her through a bathroom door. I want to get myself a gun, but a paintall gun and get the balls with rubber and / or pepper-spray! Even SO i would NEVER DARE TO TAKE IT OUT AND SHOOT AT MY FAMILY..! He is an EXPERIENCED gun owner, and he did - there are MANY REASONS to think he did it KNOWINGLY...! And the reasons will eventually show themselves..! Anyway that is ONE scenario - any other takers????

That sir is the real problem, once you realise that people who play what are effectively childrens games for a living are generally juvenile people, worse than normal people in many ways and not better, everything else makes perfect sense.

I think Oscar has been in a state of hubris for quite a long time - which is being in a state of excessive pride or self-confidence. And in this state its easy to behave irrationally and aggressively with an outcome like what has happened where he is alleged to have shot Reeva. The irony is that the state of hubris has another meaning in Greek tragedy; where being in this hubristic state can lead to ones nemesis - as in what has happened to Oscar...I have no pity for him

@anikenvader Your scenario is not quite right based on the facts. The police were called out previously about two hours before the shooting. So this was not just a hot-headed act, but a cold-blooded one which amounts to murder. He had a whole two hours to calm down after whatever initiated the domestic argument. And this fits with the general description of his psychotic temperament: previous arrest for assaulting a woman, callouts to his home for domestic incidents, boating accident involving alcohol, irresponsible road conduct, range shooting in the middle of the night, etc. This one was a head case looking for a place to happen. It's a tragedy that a young woman in the prime of her life was the sacrifice.

Somehow I suspect that in the early ours of valentine day messages of wishing Oscar a happy valentine were starting to flock in from different girls. Reeva probably didn't take it well and the arguments ensued. In a nutshell, Saint Valentine has something to do with this.

None of us commenting here were there when it happened. All we know we read in the media ... Many years ago when I was still young and my husband came home after a night on the town, in an argumentive/fighting mood, I used to lock myself in the bathroom not wanting to argue or fight. He used to try to force the door without any luck .. and after today I ask myself ... say he had a gun? In the mood he was in he most likely would have let off a few shots through the door to let go of his anger .. but definitely NOT to kill me!! I don't think men in that mood would even think that a woman would be leaning against that door .. people going into rages do things to let go of that rage without thinking.

I really hope this is not true: Oscar was one of our best exports and an icon of hope and determination for many. If these facts are true, even if this was an accident or misunderstanding, there are many indications that he used his firearm recklessly and for that then justice must follow. The bottom line however is that whichever way this goes, his life won't simply just carry on after this. A minimum of two bright lives destroyed in a moment of madness.

Totally NOT! The law demands otherwise and there is no responsible gun-owner who would act like that in any circumstances. Rule #1 = know what you are shooting at - and what is behind that target in the line of fire. This OP case has no bearing on firearm ownership but a great deal to do with lack of emotional control in one individual.

Stupidity is a disability, how many other "hero's" are behind bars because of the power they think a gun gives them? The first tragedy, is the ending of someone's life through pathetic excuses...secondly, if they had an argument, and he shot her, the tragedy is "blaming" how unsafe SA is and justifying all the weapons? He is human, granted....with or without fame...but at 26...to carry guns around, when you not even mature enough to walk away from anything toxic or detrimental to your life? THAT is the problem in this country......zuma/malema on the one hand blaming apartheid....on the other, self -righteous (predominently white) arrogance that things must always go 'their' way? A person is only as big as the things that anger them.....so, whether it was a mistake/premeditated/rage....either way, he put HIMSELF in that position...and the only 'losers' are our beautiful country, and Reeva's family

@susan, i don't think its fair to call the neighbors cowards - there is no telling what would have happened if they intervened. Also, they are probably going to appear in court, and legally i dont think the police are allowed to name them to the media.

If a neighbour heard them arguing around an hour before the shots were fired, I doubt very much he was "awoken" by an intruder in his bathroom. Surely he would realise his girlfriend was missing. Goes to show, a man shall not live by bread alone. The void of the soul, which only the Maker can fill, is the reason we commit such ills. My advice-in Jesus alone be satisfied, earth's comforts can satisy but a little...on Christ the solid rock we aught to stand all other grounds are sinking sand (health, weath, relations, fame)...We all need God, and oft we realise it when its a lil too late.

We are all too quick to judge, in all reports so far there has not been an official press release from the police, we have all been reading about speculation & unconfirmed reports from the media. The point is who said that Oscar thought he had an intruder? Until more facts are revealed by Oscar or the police we are all judging this terrible incident based on speculation.

  • nyikamn - 2013-02-15 09:06

Two hours before the police were called because of Domestic issues then two hours later they were called because of gun shots. Oscar you were hitting this girl and when she went to lock herself in the bathroom you went for your gun , you tried to push open the door but since she was on the other side and also considering you don't have leverage , you decided to waste her . Oscar you murdered the innocent girl in cold blood murder . Innocent till proven guilty my ass, dude you are guilty and this time you won't get away with it , you killed a white girl, it she was black you were going to pay the family a few million rands and tada you free. The world isa watching, I feel pity for the Judge who isa going to try you because he will be on the spotlight just like you and its a pity because of the nature of your crime he will be forced to give you the maximum proper sentence. You going to leave a R3.9 million house for a R20 million mansion which you will share with thousands of people people you never imagined you were going to share a toilet seat with. Shame on you

It is an extremely sad story. I cannot judge if this was murder or really a case of believing that there was an intruder. One thing I do believe is that living in SA makes people far more prone to this kind of accident (also not the first one in the past few months) as violent crimes are so frequent that people are more paranoid than in other countries were they do not have to live in fear.

police should of taken his gun away the first time what a pity!?

  • Boitu.m - 2013-02-15 09:11

Shocking. If the media is anything to go by then Oscar has a lot of explaining to do. First of all, if she was shot through the bathroom door four times (by the way, why would an intruder hide in the bathroom of all places?) and her body was found in the hallway that's all the way downstairs, then he had ample time to disturb the crime scene by moving the body. Which brings me to my next question, why move the body? And assuming that the info that's been reported is true and he really wasn't aware of the police having been called, what is his excuse for moving the body? Its all very incriminating in my eyes... If it really was an accident then he should've called emergency services ASAP... Could it be a case of doing a crime when everyone is presumably sleeping in the wee hours in the morning? ... Circumstantial evidence is too incriminating...

      tristan.tegroen - 2013-02-15 11:11

I agree. If you are sleeping the in same bed with a girl, you know when she is no longer there. If she is not next to you, and the bathroom light is on, you are not going to empty the 9mm on the bathroom door.
