Johannesburg - Two Ekurhuleni parks department staffers were arrested for allegedly being in possession of missing municipal gardening equipment.

A third person, who owns a garden services business was also arrested, the metro's spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago said.

Kgasago said expensive equipment was disappearing from the parks department's Railway street offices in Boksburg between June and August.

The metro's Loss Control and Investigations Unit set up an investigation and, using hi-tech gadgets and other means, they flagged two municipal employees.

On Monday, after a brief interview with metro police, they allegedly promised to co-operate and took investigators to a house in Reiger Park.

There, a bush-cutter worth R8 000 was allegedly found in the garage.

They went on to Langenhoven Street where the third person was allegedly found in possession of four chain-saws valued at R6 000 each.

"The third suspect, pointed out by the arrested pair, coincidentally is the owner of a garden services business," said Kgasago.

All the recovered equipment had the serial numbers filed off and municipal bar codes removed.

The trio, aged between 36 and 39, face charges of possession of stolen municipal property and were due to appear at the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court.
