Stop newspaper matric results - Cosas

2013-01-03 13:33

Durban - About 30 pupils protested outside the education department's offices in Durban on Thursday to demand an end to matric results being published in newspapers.

The group, which included pupils who had written matric this year, as well as some who had written in previous years, carried placards, some of which read: "Publish Angie's Salary", "Reshuffle Angie", and "To Hell With the Publication of Matrix Results". They were referring to Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga.

The protest was organised by the Congress of SA Students. Cosas provincial chairperson Goodman Machi said the organisation believed the publication of results violated pupils' rights to privacy.

"You don't want anyone to know your results without your permission as a learner."

He said the basic education department had never consulted pupils about the publication of their results.

Machi said Cosas had hoped for more pupils to join the protest, but the organisation had had difficulties transporting its members to the venue, outside the department's Truro House offices in the city centre. They intended handing a memorandum on the issue to a senior education department official.

Cosas further wanted the department to address teenage pregnancies, transport for pupils, and security at schools.

Here for once I tend to agree with them on the publication of the results.

      Shaddy Ace Nkwane - 2013-01-03 13:51

i do agree wth thm,whn u write ur exams u r alone on that desk so whn the result comes out,the whole world is going to look for u on papers

      jessie.bezuidenhout - 2013-01-03 13:55

Look at it at another way - employers can now use the newspaper to verify results of potential employee's CV's and fake senior certificates .... especially with "Fraud101" being the highest passed subject.

      dewaldmontgomery - 2013-01-03 13:56

Nonsense. It's a tradition and it's been one of the only ways students have been able to get their marks in past eras while they were on holiday. While I strongly believe only a student that hasn't put effort in will object to their results in papers, and I have a strong sense that nobody CARES if they don't know you or your circumstances, I do believe however that it should be possible in this era of technology for students to simply tick a box on their enrollment forms, and therefore capture that information and export lists of students and marks for students that have agreed in some format (Excel perhaps) and provide such to the media.

      patrick.buckley.712 - 2013-01-03 13:56

tax payers have the right to know what they are paying for!

      phae.rayden - 2013-01-03 13:59

Ditto, they most certainly have the right to privacy. Why do people think they get to decide how others should feel about their results being made public. If students want everyone to know they passed, then they should start their own public list.

      squeegee.pilot - 2013-01-03 14:13

" Hahahah... To Hell With the Publication of Matrix Results" - learn to spell before you protest...

      denis.delaport - 2013-01-03 14:16

Lets face facts, the matric results will not change if they are not published in the news paper. The paper exploints the desire of the kid the "get the news first".

      piet.boom.90 - 2013-01-03 14:50

      COSAS seek attention

      willem.dehaan.94 - 2013-01-03 15:24

You're right - it is unfair to put that in the paper where you must read it. Don't they know that most of those who passed can't read? So how would they know that they have passed? No, I suggest that the department calls them on their cell phones personally and speaks to each one privately and softly so that only they can hear it. That would be nice. And those who have failed also get called by a tearful lady who can comfort them and offer counselling. That would be nice too. And good for the cell phone companies. Anyway, why bother - was it not the demand in the struggle for liberation "pass one, pass all?'" What has become of that meritorious objective? Bring it back I say, stop this racial discrimination - pass one pass all, that it fair, is it not?

      debduplessis - 2013-01-05 10:12

They should try staying in school & work harder during the year if they now embarrassed .... we all went through it as Tax payers, families & potential employers need to know what they paying for!

  • trevor.mashilo - 2013-01-03 13:39

Those who are Protesting are the one's who had failed previously nd da one's who did nt put much effort in their studies the previous years.

on the subjest of protest, here is the ABC of acronyms/names/phrases/words, I would not like to see in 2013: apartheid BEE comrade demand entitled formally disadvantaged greed hand outs indigenisation jacob zuma kardashian left wing malema nkandla owed protest quota's redistribution struggle trade unions ubuntu victoria beckham we want x-factor youth league zimbabwe

      silas.mapuroma - 2013-01-03 13:59

Maybe this is included in Secret Information Bill, as they share the same cup

      moriri.mosweu - 2013-01-03 14:04

Patrick, you forgot to include oranje

      kortbroek.duplessis - 2013-01-03 14:38

semonatenate we can't include oranje in the list it's going to be the colour of Julius Malema, and eventually Jacob Zuma's prison jumpsuits.

  • Wikus Erasmus - 2013-01-03 13:40

What do you have to be ashamed of? JuliASS seems quite proud with his GG for woodwork....

      dewaldmontgomery - 2013-01-03 14:00

Perhaps have something to do with what I heard on the radio just now. Apparently you can't get nowhere without decent matric thesedays (which I agree with, but of course there are always room for someone clever to invent something or do something spectacular, making him or herself rich instantly despite his or her lack of education) - but the crux of the issue is perhaps that those who so horribly fail will ONLY qualify for jobs as parlementarians and politicians... Not that the average ANC voter will care, though... lots of money, tenders, tax breaks, sit there doing nothing while getting paid millions, not doing your job, and not caring whatsoever... I guess in some aspects it does still limit one's future prospects and the territory is much more competitive and dangerous. I mean, these politicians are either voted out, or corrupted and cought... (and then paid on special paid leave for two to three years, so it's still not to bad, I guess).

  • michael.pitt.100 - 2013-01-03 13:40

It's to stop showing how dumb they really are

  • Kekeletso.nax - 2013-01-03 13:41

After ALL these years, they protest, aaaaah another storm in a tea cup by those who didn't find their own names in the papers also known as Cosas.

      dewaldmontgomery - 2013-01-03 14:03

One would think after failing matric (for which you require only a pass of 30% in one's home language and another four subjects of 30-40%, so you have to be horribly stupid not to even get 40% by your OWN effort, particularly if it's your second or third attempt, regardless of textbooks and teachers, plus the papers are dumbed down reflecting the standard of education of those who set them), they wouldn't even be able to read a newspaper in the first place...

  • carolina.j.wallace - 2013-01-03 13:42

    grow up!!!

      robert.olivier.92 - 2013-01-03 14:22

Those that are protesting won't grow up,, as they would still want to be considered as YOUTH even if they are 30+ and I think that is why the ANCYL are full of "Drop-outs" and "Failures"

      robert.olivier.92 - 2013-01-03 14:24

Those that are protesting won't grow up,, as they would still want to be considered as YOUTH even if they are 30+ and I think that is why the ANCYL are full of "Drop-outs" and "Failures"

  • nathan.g.moss - 2013-01-03 13:43

Clearly these pupils failed. Maybe if you put as much effort into your school work as you do with protesting you would have passed.

  • Mary Milne Archibald - 2013-01-03 13:44

COSAS should also be asking why did 50% of Class of 2012 not get to Matric?

      dewaldmontgomery - 2013-01-03 14:04

Cosas should also be asking which political party is ruling the provinces in which their students so badly failed that they feel 'eembarrast'.

  • tina.leal.353 - 2013-01-03 13:44

What about all those who did pass. They deserve to have their names published. Something to be proud of!

      dewaldmontgomery - 2013-01-03 14:06

Goes both ways I guess. But even those who pass, pass a qualification that's hardly worth anything in the real world (outside South Africa). I mean, our students have a hard time getting their paper work in order for work visas if their only qualification is matric to begin with. They are often required further testing despite the 'papers they already have'.

      kortbroek.duplessis - 2013-01-03 14:55

There was a reason for apartheid...

      dewaldmontgomery - 2013-01-03 14:08

Except, it shouldn't have classified by race. It should simply have classified by (1) intelligence (2) ability to understand the 21st century. If you passed that, regardless of your colour, it would have been a perfect way to keep those who don't have any intelligence or don't understand the 21st century from deciding on the future of those who have intelligence and who do understand the 21st century through simple voting rights. Let them rule themselves in their own way kind of thing. What's that movie called again? Idiocracy or something.

      Lyndatjie - 2013-01-03 14:13

Really Feeble? What reason was that hmmmm??? Pray do share your words of wisdom with us all so that we can comprehend such a deeply profound statement...

      robert.olivier.92 - 2013-01-03 14:33

and you want to bring Apartheid BACK into the scenario.. It is people like YOU that DO NOT WANT TO FORGET. Yes, it was better, EVEN a different Race from what you are WOULD ALSO say that it was batter back THEN. But then ask yourself: What was REALLY BETTER? Now? 1Year Ago? 20/30 WHATeVER Year Ago? Not ALL Whites where living the good life back-then, They ALSO lived the "Struggle"

      FeebleGastro - 2013-01-03 15:10

Lyndatjie, you either get it or you don't. You obviously don't. Gerald yes, but in the end there is an easier way. Not PC, but it was what apartheid was based on. Olivier, you are trying to make a point, I'm sure. Khumo, if I was black I also would have hated the truth. That's life.

  • karen.williams.3990418 - 2013-01-03 13:47

  • silas.mapuroma - 2013-01-03 13:56

It seems we are hiding our Black commitment in Education, We need publication for the results, nothing senister about these, except Cosas leads by failures who always undermines our Children's education, I thinks if all of us Africans, we had finance to send our Children to private schools, this would have improved our passing mark requirement to 50% pass per subject not 30%, Cosas and Sadtu are there not for our total education, Cosas this has been happening long time of students commiting suicides, this will continue,

  • tsomakae.dire - 2013-01-03 13:56

I fully concur, what is the purpose of this newspaper thing? Are you trying to humiliate those who did not make it? I always thought that it was stupid

  • lionel.defrontignac - 2013-01-03 14:07

As usual, COSAS and their older buddies, SADTU sprout bs, instead of focusing on the real issues. OH, but wait; aren't they ANC linked? It is still appalling, given the low standard that has been set, that we have a pass rate that is not 98% or more.

These results have been part and parcel of each students school life for ages. Those who support this should ask themselves if they want to keep their lack of hard work and drive a secret from the rest of the world? When I passed Matric, I like many others wanted to shout my success from the highest rooftops. Wake up you lazy kids and stop using every little obstacle to excuse your lack of performance. You have studied the top pop songs and know every word, you know each level on your favourite electronic game, all the latest dance steps and fashion trends. You know exactly how to use your cell phone and what is hot or not. Pay that kind of attention to your schoolwork and you won't be ashamed of your exam results. In my day, we tried every trick in the book to make sure that we were prepared for our exams, even if the teacher was bad. We borrowed books from other kids at other schools in order to make sure that we were on top of things. We had study groups and we spent time preparing for the great day when we would have our name in the newspaper. We did not concentrate on how to sexually satisfy our partners and disrespect our parents and elders, especially since we respected that our family went to great lengths to send us to school and buy all the stuff which we needed to try and help us become successful. GROW UP AND WISE UP.IF YOU FAILED THIS YEAR, TRY HARDER AGAIN NEXT YEAR. YOU NEED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR OWN LIFE AND THE FRUITS OF YOUR LABOURS.

  • J.A.Rademan - 2013-01-03 14:48

That there IS the problem with school children resultant from a Liberation rule. All militant and trained to think like ANC did 15 years ago. Now days it is like apartheid is back, if you dont like what is in the media, suppress it...., LEARN something it did not work for the apartheid regime and it will not, for any future regime. Transparency is good, and so is competition. After all, every studen now becomes an economical asset or burden. To be come successfull you must compete you cant hide your good or bad results. The youth helped to win democratic freedom, why is it that they want to have economic freedom but dont want to WORK and Compete for it like in any democracy, but sees economic freedom as a liberation struggle. I guess these Lazy bums came to understand that it is easier to bully en masse and take, it by force and in the process ruining the infrastructure that was built up over decades, than to work and achieve it themselves. Or is it a culture thing.....

  • ndyeboreginaldmazawule - 2013-01-03 14:50

This COSASA is sick really, I mean u failed u failed and publication of results makes no difference in any student's feelings. 'You don't want anyone to know your results without your permission as a learner.' Results have been published in newspapers long before and we never complain.

South Africa need to think about something better to do no t just rubbist. Pakistani are destroying our country these are the things we need to talk about not just rubbish.

  • colin.spear - 2013-01-03 15:40

Agreed. To be honest I never really thought about it until now but thinking back many, many summers ago when I passed my matric. About 2 minutes were spent looking up my results and much of the rest of the day was looking up the results of my school mates. It really is an archaic practice which is both unnecessary and outdated.

      lee.brand.73 - 2013-01-05 10:30

The rest of the day looking at your school mates? Weird. Took me 2 minutes and then I was off to the party with my school mates.

  • mmoledis - 2013-01-03 15:45

Cosas should not concentrate on useless things like fighting news papers for publishing students results, because publishing results is a better way of getting results and should concentrate on how to help students to do better at school and also fight with their fellow pupils who go to school with bad attitude and influence, going to school with marijuana, drugs and weapons to threaten teachers as this is the end results of many pupils failling exams as teachers are affraid to can even go extra mile doing their job for the sake of their life,so those are issues Cosas should concentrate on and stop saying this and that about results being published, pupils should have a culture of competition and learning in order to do well at the end of the year.
