Johannesburg - Homes and businesses were damaged when a storm raged through Klerksdorp and Jouberton informal settlement in the North West on Wednesday, said the Department of Developmental Local Government and Housing.

Spokesperson Lesiba Kgwele said the storm lasted for about an hour, and caused extensive damage in the town, rattling a number of shacks and RDP houses, which were also affected by another storm in 2007.

Car dealerships in town had their display vehicles damaged, while a clinic in Kanana and Tshepisong Hospital in Jouberton were also hit.

Municipal offices and a magistrate's court in town sustained damage estimated at millions.

Parts of Jouberton were still without electricity in the evening and telephone lines were also cut off.

No injuries were reported.
