Cape Town - An off-duty policeman was shot dead in Strand on Wednesday morning, Western Cape police said.

The constable, 30, was on standby when he was shot in a field in Hlati street, Lwandle, just after midnight, Lt-Col Andre Traut said.

"At the time of incident, the member who was stationed at the local criminal record centre in Somerset West, was using his official transport, a VW Caddy," he said.

"At this stage it is unclear why he was in the area of the crime scene."

The policeman's service firearm was missing and was presumed to have been stolen.

EWN reports two suspects have been arrested and will appear soon.
