Solly the hippo dies

2012-08-24 11:07

Johannesburg - A young hippopotamus that has been stuck in a swimming pool at the Monate Conservation Lodge in Limpopo since Tuesday has died during a rescue attempt, eNews Channel Africa reported.

The hippo was named Solly after one of his caregivers.

Solly Sibuyi, 30, who has been a game warden at the lodge for nine years, has been feeding the 4-year-old hippo and checking up on him before and after game drives to make sure "he's still okay", Beeld reported earlier.

"Oh, my heart feels sorry for him. I miss him at the dam when I check up on the other hippos," Sibuyi said.

The hippo's mother reportedly gave birth recently, and more dominant males forced him from the herd.

I'm sad Solly didnt make it

      kevin.pitzer - 2012-08-24 11:32

      Me too...RIP Solly.

      anton.dwl - 2012-08-24 12:01

So pathetic Why did they not throw sand bags in the pool while there was a lot of water, and create a submerged ramp?. The hippo then could of walked out on his own. They have blood on their hands.

      janet.m.naude - 2012-08-24 12:34

@ anton: I am sure that you are aware that hippos are the most dangerous and unpredictable of all wild animals. Sandbags were considered, but the possible danger to people was too great. I do think it is shocking that the vet only arrived many hours after the rescue was scheduled, when there was already extreme heat and most of the water had been drained from the pool as per the vet's instructions. I hope his apparent uncaring attitude is not common amoung our wildlife vets - heaven help our precious and fast-diminishing heritage.

      ann.murray.9279 - 2012-08-24 14:34

Oh no - I am so sad. I just love hippos. RIP Solly :(

      janice.mcmaster.92 - 2012-08-25 11:15

Why didnt they drain the pool, dart him and then get the crane to take him out when it first happened?

  • jackie.stone.501 - 2012-08-24 11:20

I was listening to John's suggestion on 702 about draining the water in a pool and the hippo freely walk away. I got to say it was a dump suggestion, how did he expect to get out of that pool

      louise.patterton - 2012-08-24 11:40

      raymond.romans.5 - 2012-08-24 12:11

      jackie, you sound 'dump'.

      jackie.stone.501 - 2012-08-24 12:41

@Airborne68 Thanks, at least I sound but not foolish man like U

      raymond.romans.5 - 2012-08-24 13:38

      See what I mean? Dumpo.

  • andre.smith.125323 - 2012-08-24 11:25

Pathetic planning and implementation. If we can't save a hippo because of tardness, how the hell can our country be saved.

      sarel.brits - 2012-08-24 12:37

Well as long as we don't all jump in that pool we should be OK

  • shelagh.smith.77 - 2012-08-24 11:26

Oh that's sad!! I know they said there was a chance he might, but I was so hoping that he'd make it.

  • Hemlock - 2012-08-24 11:29

So sad. Poor Solly. This has left me with damp eyes!!!

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-08-24 12:29

Hemlock, me too, I need a tissue.

      Hemlock - 2012-08-24 13:36

  • gareth.coats - 2012-08-24 11:34

Did the journo have a stroke while writing this? RIP Solly, Get Well soon Journo.

      karolina.dean.5 - 2012-08-24 11:38

I'm glad I'm not the only one confused!

  • vaughan.greene - 2012-08-24 11:35

very confusing article, did the hippo die or not? one person says solly died and the next says he must live where he can be safe and happy?

      stephne.dutoit - 2012-08-24 11:43

Agree, more and more News24 articles popping up these days that are very badly written...

  • Shaun McDermott - 2012-08-24 11:38

Does one need a STD 5 to be a reporter on News 24?

      sarel.brits - 2012-08-24 12:31

WTF I just thought you said the Reporter has 5 STD`s, the hippo drowned whiles trying to get away and then I realise you are referring to grade 7 lucky its Friday

  • Andriette - 2012-08-24 11:38

    Very sad.

  • glenda.smith.5454 - 2012-08-24 11:40

How long would it have taken them to organise a few sand bags so that Solly could walk out of that pool freely? It is a shame it took so long for them to try and rescue him. Epic Fail!

      Bosvark Van Rensburg - 2012-08-24 11:47

exactly my point. I think lack of professional people around this incident.

      Erna - 2012-08-24 12:30

      I agree - didn't try hard enough!

  • dieter.muller.942145 - 2012-08-24 11:42

      sarel.brits - 2012-08-24 12:45

@ pitro never made biltong of one of those things maybe its Chinese lol

  • Arnoldus.DuToit - 2012-08-24 11:42

This story makes absolutely no sense. Headline: Sollie dies. Body of story: Sollie got moved to a new location. Am I misreading this or is it just that poorly written?

  • Bosvark Van Rensburg - 2012-08-24 11:44

I think the whole process was unprofessional, they failed to minimise the stress level of the animal, like putting a crane a day before capturing time and obviously they where many people around causing more stress. they should have built a slide-in ramp for the animal to climb out.

  • anri.tredoux - 2012-08-24 11:46

This is very tragic.. Can the News24 team please check their grammar. The preview on the Home page has way to many grammar mistakes.

  • deanlevey1987 - 2012-08-24 11:47

Pathtic that it had to come to this. When they said yesterday that the rescue would be delayed until this morning I knew it was the wrong decision. Very sad news.

  • Paula - 2012-08-24 11:48

    oh sad story

  • hennie.botha.90 - 2012-08-24 11:48

    Rescue badly organized !

  • denis.dendrinos - 2012-08-24 11:49

    aaah damn man - sad.

  • Ntarts - 2012-08-24 11:49

"I'm very happy they can help Solly the hippo. I'm going to miss him, but he must live where he can be safe and happy," Sibuyi said. --------------------------------------------------------- Is the hippo dead or not?!?!? Shoddy journalism!

  • fareed.mohammed - 2012-08-24 11:50

This article makes no sense. Did he die or is he being moved?

  • sarel.brits - 2012-08-24 11:59

This report confuses the crap out of me. Let's rename Solly Elvis, because I don't think he`s really dead its all a ATKV conspiracy he is living in Welcome somewhere and will open for Urie Els on Oppie koppie, and no its not the English Oppie Koppie where Malema opened for Zumpies the other day. Just a joke no harm intended

      Ritz40 - 2012-08-24 12:09

  • shirley.steenkamp - 2012-08-24 12:00

Its always sad when an animal who depends on us to protect it dies! R.I.P.

  • roger.newby.142 - 2012-08-24 12:02

Instead of draining the pool why didn't they fill it to overflowing and then help Polly float out.

      Ritz40 - 2012-08-24 12:11

This is so funny, how do you float over the brim?? LOL

      jurie.nel.3 - 2012-08-24 12:48

Ritz, when your name is Polly, you fly!

  • mrp721 - 2012-08-24 12:03

So sad for Solly, but I think they should have drained the pool and made make shift steps or a ramp out of sandbags or something so the hippo could have walked/climbed out... I really don't think they looked at all the options... RIP Solly... But now with that said, this article is very BADLY written news24, yes Solly died but at the bottom of your story you are making it sound like he was moved to a new location???? Seriously your reporting is becoming very sloppy, please do a proof read and edit before posting/publishing articles...

  • Bradley Froud - 2012-08-24 12:03

Another pathetic attempt at News24 reporting. I assume the Hippo is dead, as the headline suggests so. Other than that, bad reporting.

  • Jason - 2012-08-24 12:08

    oh how sad

  • jackie.stone.501 - 2012-08-24 12:15

Why does it look like that animals's life is more important than humans. If they are not chasing humans, they cost them money. And they are not facing extinct.

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-08-24 12:33

Jackie,stone.501. Animals are more important than some people. Now you know.

      jackie.stone.501 - 2012-08-24 12:42

Thanks for clarifying that your life is no more important than that of a hippo

      osiris.friend.5 - 2012-08-24 19:00

once we let animals die when we are suppossed to care and protect them....especially when we infringe on their terrain .....we start next with animal and human massacre.....

  • rusty.markham - 2012-08-24 12:18

I cannot understand why one corner of the pool was not filled with sand so that he could climb out at night, Stress , darting and lifting was so expensive and dangerous......

  • rusty.markham - 2012-08-24 12:19

Cannot understand why they didnt fill in one corner of the pool and let him climb out when he was ready,

  • carlize.pieterse - 2012-08-24 12:20

Hulle kon rerig die swembad net volgemaak het to bo, en dan die seekoei uitgehelp het sonder om al daai gewig en druk opsy organe te plaas deur hom in die lug te laat hang, omdat die swembad se watervlak laag was...

  • michelle.e.magson - 2012-08-24 12:22

ok, so after a re read ... is he dead or not?

  • faizieishlah.shabalala - 2012-08-24 12:24

    RIP Solly.

  • kwheeler2405 - 2012-08-24 12:57

They could have drained the pool, put a sand ramp in the pool as per nature and Solly would have been able to get out, they could have done so MUCH MORE!!! Rest in Peace Solly, sorry they couldnt rescue you... This to me is more heartbreaking than all the other S*i* on the News!!! Be Well Little Hipps

amazing that they could not make a plan in 3 days - if it was really urgent dig the side of the pool out.

  • israelk - 2012-08-24 17:37
