Student dies after fall from bridge

2011-08-04 09:41

Cape Town - A University of Stellenbosch student died on Wednesday afternoon, after being admitted to Stellenbosch Mediclinic with serious head and chest injuries following a fall from a bridge on the campus.

University security staff found an unconscious Reynard Strydom, 22, under the bridge at the JS Gericke library during routine patrols in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

According to ER24 spokesperson Andre Visser, Strydom fell about six metres. No other students were in the vicinity when paramedics arrived. The circumstances of his death remain a mystery.

Communications officer for the university, Mohamed Shaik, said management had learnt with sadness about Strydom’s death.

Police will investigate the death, but no foul play was suspected.

My sympathies to the family - how very sad! Doesn't matter how and what happened - please, no funny comments! This is terrible! I have sons that age at Stellenbosch Uni.

      Chrissie Noncedo Sam - 2011-08-04 10:15

      Its really sad

      rickeydc - 2011-08-04 10:26

farmworker - did your mother drop you on your head when you were a baby? Surely, no person can be that heartless and rude..

      Jeffrey Jones - 2011-08-04 10:38

A 22 year old student dies, and some idiots find this to be a source of fun and humour?

      Taboo - 2011-08-04 11:03

farmworker - your last sentence makes no sense. I suggest you go back the school you attended, and demand a refund in school fees, as your grammer sucks - you chop.

      Komasa - 2011-08-04 11:15

@farmworker you need to deal with your anger and the tragedies in life will become clearer in your mind.

      ivory - 2011-08-04 12:27

@farmworker. Your comments are reported, I hope you won't be able to make anymore comments! Stay off the internet!!

      chanty01 - 2011-08-04 13:06

@FARMWORKER you are actually an attention whore. you make inhumane, insensitive comments... you may have your name blocked on the website. but when someone reports you, and the IT department identifies you through your account information, lets see how much balls you have then

  • Ryan77 - 2011-08-04 09:50

    Very sad ! Poor family.

  • Anchorman - 2011-08-04 09:57

WTF is happening at Stellenbosch is there like a cult, cause people always getting killed

      rickeydc - 2011-08-04 10:26

Was thinking the same thing earlier... horrendous as it sounds, but they are always in the news!

      Martin du Plessis - 2011-08-04 10:45

      It's called Shofar.

      nic - 2011-08-04 12:33

Hey its soo true...Stellenbosch students seem to die all the time.. When I was there in 2005, the infamous incident about the girl who was muredered took place as well as the Maties student who was killed by the great white. There were a couple of other murders of staff and some motor the year end the death toll of those directly related to Stellenbosch University was 9 if I recall.

      Markusman - 2011-08-04 13:05

as a stellenbosch student, I find your comments very narrow minded. as sad as it is, university students die all over the country all the time, the difference is that at SU, people are on campus all hours of the day and night because so many people live ON the campus. UCT for instance is comparatively deserted at night. this means that there is a much greater chance of an incident happening on SU campus. On a slightly different note, students go out and party. its a fact and many drink too much and an "incident" occurs. suddenly because it happened on campus, the uni is responsible and the media piles in. Whereas if the exact same incident happens in a public space, hardly a second thought is given.

      Anchorman - 2011-08-04 14:35

I bet you all 18 people that disliked my comment is from Stellenbosch just saying what is the truth, now you can go dislike this comment as well

      b.rian - 2011-08-04 16:06

"as a stellenbosch student, I find your comments very narrow minded"..hold your horses @Markusman.. wat I think Anchorman and the rest meant was that it just seems tragedies involve stellenbosch students often. I dnt think they were in any way blaming the Uni. As a non-stellenbosch student, I find there comments justified, as I had the same sentiments when i read the article. Dont be so sensitive.

  • Donald - 2011-08-04 09:57

Whatever the circumstances, this is tragic. Deepest sympathy to the family and friends.

      Komasa - 2011-08-04 11:21

Donald your comment puts to bed all the speculation of this incident. Agree 100%.

  • - 2011-08-04 09:58

Condolences to the family and friends. I've been a student at SUN, some sports like acrobatics are sometimes practiced in risky places more especially when the coaches are gone.

      Sunshine - 2011-08-05 07:10

      Sunshine - 2011-08-05 07:13

  • Johnny - 2011-08-04 10:41

Student, early hours of the morning, ever considered it may just be a cause of excessive alcohol intake or just a freak accident, either way it is a terrible loss for his friends and family, eternal rest grant unto him

  • Palesa Masoeu - 2011-08-04 10:44

Trust News24 commenters to turn a simple tragic accident into a racial feud

      Fedup - 2011-08-04 10:52

      Well said

      LiciousDee - 2011-08-04 14:57

@Palesa people are so full of hate that they don't even have a pinch of compassion when a life is lost smh!

  • Esperanza - 2011-08-04 10:46

OMW this is horrible, but there are railings all around that area, so the only way to fall over would be if you were hanging over it or trying to balance on the railing, as I have seen guys doing countless times.... my condolences to the family

      Komasa - 2011-08-04 11:42

Makes you think Esperanza were his friends there with him when he fell???

  • jka - 2011-08-04 10:55

@ farmworker - for decades wednesday has been nicknamed "klein saterdag" in Stellenbosch - its a maties tradition to get drunk on a wednesday - Thursday morning lecturers were always empty, bar a few keen students and one or two highly hungover/still drunk students. Not necessarily a great tradition, but one nonetheless.

      Felix - 2011-08-04 11:05

There is no point in trying to explain anything to that braindead, heartless fool.

      schochn - 2011-08-04 11:16

"klein Saterdag" is Wednesday evening, the party night...but this happened Wednesday morning...

      judicatordex - 2011-08-04 11:19

  • denman - 2011-08-04 11:07

@farmworker - If you have "inside" information regarding the incident then I suppose you could argue like that. Were you there?

  • Virginia - 2011-08-04 11:11

Who knows, maybe he was attacked comming from the library, surely he cannot just fall over, unless he tried to commit sucide.

      Ntfutfuko - 2011-08-04 11:28

The people who gave you that name are naughty, they just twisted it a bit!

  • schochn - 2011-08-04 11:13
