Cape Town - A University of Cape Town drama student has fallen to her death while celebrating her 21st birthday at a hotel in the centre of the city.

The Cape Times reported on Tuesday that Rosa Carlyle-Mitchell was at the Kimberley Hotel in Roeland Street with family members on Sunday evening when the tragedy occurred. She was apparently sitting on the first floor balcony when she fell backwards. She was declared dead at the scene.

Hotel manager Eric Hodson confirmed she had fallen to her death but would not divulge further details.

A UCT spokesperson said the university was saddened by her death, and is in contact with her family. It will offer counselling services to students affected by the incident.

The Witness reported that Carlyle-Mitchell was from KwaZulu-Natal and had matriculated from St Mary's Diocesan School for Girls in Kloof in 2010.

Her brother and sister were with her at the hotel when she fell to her death. Her parents were on an overseas trip and were expected back in the country on Tuesday.
