East London - An Eastern Cape student was stabbed to death by his roommate in an apparent dispute over rent, according to a report on Friday.

Police spokesperson Stephen Marais said a man in his 20s was arrested after the university student was killed on Thursday, the Daily Dispatch reported.

The arrested man was injured during the argument at a block of flats behind the University of Fort Hare's East London campus.

"He is in hospital as he was injured in the fight. Police cannot confirm how the suspect sustained the injuries. [We] seized a weapon believed to have been used in the murder,” said Marais.

The Dispatch said other students witnessed the fight during which both men armed themselves with knives while arguing over outstanding rent money.
