Johannesburg - A North West University student was arrested for allegedly stabbing another student on the university's Potchefstroom campus on Friday morning, North West police said.

The stabbing incident was allegedly the result of a dispute over loud music.

"It is alleged the victim was woken up by loud... music coming from the suspect’s room," spokesperson Sergeant Kealeboga Molale said.

"He went out and asked him to lower the music. An argument ensued between the two and the suspect allegedly took a pair of scissors, stabbed the victim on his arm, shoulder and hip."

Police were called to the scene and the student was arrested.

The student who was stabbed was treated at a local hospital. The student who was arrested will appear in the Potchefstroom Magistrate's Court soon.

"Police are investing a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Investigations continue," Molale said.

The incident was believed to have happened around 07:00 at one of the university's male residences.
