Students face action after ‘blackface’

2014-08-06 09:01

Pretoria - Two University of Pretoria students will face disciplinary action after a photo of the two dressed up as black domestic workers went viral.

The photo shows the two women covered in brown paint, wearing scarves over their heads and with pillows stuffed into their skirts to make their buttocks look bigger.

The pictures were taken at a private party but the university told Eyewitness News that disciplinary action will be instituted against the students because they allegedly brought the institution’s name into disrepute.

The photos were posted on Facebook but were soon removed.

The incident comes just days after the SA Human Rights Commission said that there had been a spike in racism related incidents, particularly at universities around the country.

"The SAHRC remains deeply concerned about the lack of transformation taking place in South African society 20 years into its democratic dispensation," SAHRC chairperson Lawrence Mushwana said.

In most cases, black students were targeted, Sapa reported.

"There had been an increase in the 'k' word [being used] where there is not sufficient respect for each other among students."

The Tuks incident has caused a storm on social media with many asking what the big deal is.

Others offended by the dress-up say the incident is a case of ‘blackface’ in which white people dress up and paint themselves black and mock black people by acting out certain stereotypes.

How is this degrading? They properly went to some dress up party. I won't find a black guy dressed in a stereotypical khaki shorts with comb in his sock and veldskoen racist.

  • Jan Grimbeek - 2014-08-06 09:10

Time that all the "initiates" that paint their faces white for rituals are also disciplined and told that "white" is, according to them, not acceptable for their own skin colour !!!!!

      Willem Schutte - 2014-08-06 10:01

Well put - I made a similar comment - but my sentiments exactly - why is this a one-sided thing - Actually - it should not even be a "thing" at all.

  • miska.ponyecz - 2014-08-06 09:11

When Leon schuster does it it's funny all of a sudden now it's racist WTF

      Carling Blacklabel - 2014-08-06 09:41

      good example!

      Sakhikhaya Dlala - 2014-08-06 09:45

Leon Schuster is not funny. He never was, in fact black people don't even like his movies.

      Outa Kontext - 2014-08-06 10:22

Have you seen the movie 'white chicks' dlala? Is that not the same thing? Did you find that movie funny? I know white people did. Laugh a little.

      Tatenda Mai Makanaka Mlambo-Mahleko - 2014-08-06 10:26

Sakhikhaya@ speak for yourself i love his movies. I am no coconut or suck up but a proud black person who has accepted i cant change the past but i can change the future, am not going to raise my child with a racist mentality. 20 years is a long time its time we healed those wounds and move on together.

  • Franco Hanekom - 2014-08-06 09:11

In my workplace a lot of black and coloured people are using the k-word. Is this okay?

  • Z3RO|SKiNNY - 2014-08-06 09:11

    Hahaha!

  • Tatenda Mai Makanaka Mlambo-Mahleko - 2014-08-06 09:13

Whats the big deal about dressing up as maids. EFF does it all the time. I dont see any racism in wanting to be black when you are white lol

      Karl Kat - 2014-08-06 10:16

Your attitude and mindset say it all of being a grown up and proud of who and what you are. It's such a shame that many other folk have a identify problem

  • jacques.potgieter.313 - 2014-08-06 09:13

Is everything racist now? Can nothing be done without it being seen as hateful and intended to hurt others?

      DeAndre Sosa - 2014-08-06 09:31

If you know it "MIGHT" offend, I probably don't do it. A black and coloured friend of mine was making jokes about white girls flat bums and why would one find it attractive. It was a joke laughed by white men, black and coloured but the white ladies who were there took offense and they went to DC. Do you blame the white ladies?

      jacques.potgieter.313 - 2014-08-06 10:14

If it is directly to your face, aimed at you it changes the story a bit. How are these attention seeking students, who more than likely dressed the way that they did because of a certain theme, different to those who beg by the side of the road and paint their faces and bodies white??

  • Robbie Crouch - 2014-08-06 09:15

Fine to fancy dress but not so fine to post pictures on FB... Be careful what you publish!

  • Sticky Toffee - 2014-08-06 09:16

O yes, leets forget about the hundreds of starving children, the endless crime against innocent law abiing citizens, the rise in HIV especially in the poorer communities, the lack of proper housing, the growing incidents of corruption within government and big business and the lack of decent jobs for our youth....yes lets forget about all of this and worry about two girls having fun at a dress up party!!! FFS

      Sam Nkowane - 2014-08-06 10:41

Nonsense - who is forgetting about any of those things.

  • Olivia du Plessis - 2014-08-06 09:16

Oh please grow up. This is not racist.

  • Epkings Ontherise - 2014-08-06 09:16

omg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! one of these days ANC will make all people drink a medicine to make poo a different colour ...

  • Byron Miller - 2014-08-06 09:18

The joke here is them making such a big deal of it. Why can they not deal with it in private, This media attention will blow it way out of proportion.

  • KevinKing - 2014-08-06 09:18

    Jail Leon Schuster IMMEDIATELY!!!

  • Nachos Gracious Maifo - 2014-08-06 09:18

  • Riaan Robbeson - 2014-08-06 09:20

The inability to laugh at oneself is a characteristic of a small and narrow mind......

  • Justin Slabert - 2014-08-06 09:21

I do not see what the big fuss is about. I am a varsity student aswell and students dont do these types of things to be racist,, They do it because they are having a laugh,, Get over yourselves and stop saying you are transforming to a more democratic society because it is clear for all to see you are transforming into a pro-black society, like what apartheid did with whites just a lot more subtle about it.

  • Abba Kekana - 2014-08-06 09:21

Really now?? I don't see anything wrong with this..if this is wrong Leon must be jailed too...come on people where is unity

  • Monique Steyn - 2014-08-06 09:22

Oh come on, complain about something worth while like murders, child rapists, corruption ... This is absolutely ridiculous ! I can promise you it was totally innocent.

  • Sergio Oneness Pentecostal Williams - 2014-08-06 09:22

haibo! I concur, definitely bad taste, irresponsible perhaps not racist, yoh we must stop b this bias and careful approach!

  • louri.jacobs - 2014-08-06 09:22

I'm so over racism, the story is getting old.. If we see racism in everything then maybe they should arrest the guy on the street with white paint on his face and dancing like a robot for money... Please SA get over it

  • Nigel Berry - 2014-08-06 09:22

Hey, its fine to trash and burn your campus but don't you dare have fun.

  • Drikus Greeff - 2014-08-06 09:23

Movie: White chicks? Are the Wayans brother racist too? Not everything has to do with racism! Stop being so flippen OVER SENSITIVE.

  • Melissa May Nel - 2014-08-06 09:24

  • Djembe Ndebele - 2014-08-06 09:24

Don't you people get tired of insulting the black race of SA and the rest of the world?

      Andre Neuhoff - 2014-08-06 09:42

You should grow a backbone and get rid of the wishbone.

      David Van Schalkwyk - 2014-08-06 09:42

      Karl Kat - 2014-08-06 09:45

I am glad news24 readers/commentators do not represent the bulk of the white race in South Africa- I have come across really intelligent white people- ditto for black people....I at times am in awe of the stupidity that is displayed on this forum... what is the collective IQ of news24 commentators?

  • Justin Barnes - 2014-08-06 09:24

Was there not a tv program the Coconuts? They did the same thing.

  • Athena - 2014-08-06 09:29

There's this black kid who paints himself white and does mime acts at the robots. Is he a racist too?

      Outa Kontext - 2014-08-06 10:25

According to UP, yes, yes he is.

  • Libby January - 2014-08-06 09:29

Rather make a fuss over some of the racist laws in this country - for instance excluding certain groups from jobs. Not two students paying dress-up. Get over yourselves!

  • Siyabonga Khonzuyise Magagula - 2014-08-06 09:31

White people: how do you know if its racism or not when you've never experienced it. You can't talk about something you don't even know personally!

      Z3RO|SKiNNY - 2014-08-06 09:36

We experience racism when we apply for jobs, bro...

      David Van Schalkwyk - 2014-08-06 09:43

      But did you die???

      David Van Schalkwyk - 2014-08-06 09:44

      But did you d!e

      henri.p.grove - 2014-08-06 10:00

For the last 20 years there has been a reversed racism taking place - can you see it or us it only racism when is white on black Open your eyes please

      Ruan Bezuidenhout - 2014-08-06 10:12

How misdirected can you be Siyabonga? And how naieve are you to think white peope have not been victim to rasicm. Me being better qualified for a job and not getting it because I'm white is rasicm. A talented sports player not being chosen because he is white is rasicm. Slogans such as "kill the boer" are rasicm. Farms being taken away from farmers who's been slaving to make a living is rasicm. However, we can't say anything about it, then it's racist. Get your head out off your @ss and stop riding on the wave created by your ancestors.

      Tishan Pillay - 2014-08-06 10:24

      Explain BEE...

      Bruce Wilson - 2014-08-06 10:33

"White people: how do you know if its racism or not when you've never experienced it.." I believe that white people are discriminated against on a daily basis. AA, BEE, etc. Are you being deliberately obtuse or are you simply naïve? Maybe you truly believe that racism directed against white people really does not matter because most of them seem to be able to prosper in spite of blatant racism and discrimination. For example - the African country of Liberia has a racist constitution (Non-negroids are barred from citizenship & owning land) but this fact is simply ignored by (the usually very vocal) Human Rights activists.

  • Boitumelo Monareng - 2014-08-06 09:33

honestly i dnt knw how to feel or what to say,i dnt knw if it was meant to be a joke or if it ws racist,my mind is jst blank right now

      Justin Slabert - 2014-08-06 09:59

I think it was just humor. In bad taste though but just innocent fun??

  • Nathan Graham - 2014-08-06 09:35

I don't have the context in which this was done, but if it was for a dress-up party I personally don't see any harm done here. I've been to many parties where people dressed up as a hobo or something silly like that.

  • Yandi Sigenu - 2014-08-06 09:36

There's a lot more wrong with the comments section on News24, than that picture. On every article where there's blatant bad taste and underlying racist foundations to the way people act, people are more interested in "protecting their own" than commenting on the situation at hand.

  • antonio.tonin.58 - 2014-08-06 09:39

It's a pity that the intellectual level of these "debates" is so low. The students involved clearly went straight fro kindergarten to university, before which their only encounter with "other" South Africans had been with domestic workers, and many of those voicing their vitriol, whether right wing or mainstream party political somehow learned to write before they could think! Act like this are quite simply and obviously destructive, hurtful, unacceptable and reprehensible. What else needs to be said?

I just love fancy dress parties !!!!!!!!! Dress up like anybody thing. Why don't you publish the pictures and let black people dress like whites and see who wins by votes...... ? This is no racism..... I think its fun !!!!

  • Cathy Jones - 2014-08-06 09:42

Should we also discipline black women who wear blonde wigs and use skin lighteners?

      Boitumelo Monareng - 2014-08-06 10:29

and white ppl who tan their skin, and make their bums biggr

  • Peter Van Rensburg - 2014-08-06 09:43

just wait until i see that beggar at the traffic lights...with his face painted white...I'll give him a jolly good bollocking!!...hahahahaha...ffs, now we can't even laugh at ourselves anymore...so sad.

  • Mfumbayelangabi Silwane - 2014-08-06 09:43

There is nothing wrong, black imitate whites as well, unless if they are trying to tell us that Black is inferior.Human Rights are the ones who are pushing this for their own selfish ends.We should be free to speak freely.

      Brett Glass - 2014-08-06 10:44

Mine too, its for whites to say that it is a harmless prank. Then later they do a tally and claim that majority people think its are harmless joke. There are not more than 15 black opinions out of 70. Worse still when you read the slur that they allow.

      Brett Glass - 2014-08-06 10:58

modetrator is white bro, guaranteed. Can tell by tone of comments!

  • Shane Boyd - 2014-08-06 09:47

Like black people say to me.....it's not racist its xenophobic. .....

  • Nolan May - 2014-08-06 09:48

based on the history of South Africa the older generation of black people will definitely take more offence to this than the younger as they are deeply scared by the past however I think that these university girls did not take into consideration that some people will take offence to this as they were being ignorant. Be careful when doing anything involving race in this country as this is the result of Sa's history and society needs time to heal, who knows how many years this will take???

  • Thato Phadi - 2014-08-06 09:48

How's this about racism?. Too me it sounds like 2 students dressed up for a party. Good thing halloween is not popular in S.A.

  • Zaga Styne - 2014-08-06 09:53

That Picture makes me sick not smile.. black-face is wrong full stop.

      You need help!!

      Outa Kontext - 2014-08-06 10:32

Go watch the movie "white chicks" and learn to laugh a little.

  • Emma Sanderson - 2014-08-06 09:54

This is a load of rubbish. It is a dress up party and has nothing to do with the institution. If you look for racism all the time you will find it. I welcome the day when if we argue it will be seen as a difference of opinion solely and have nothing to do with skin pigmentation. Love how this makes the news but of the medical students sabotaging and burning property claiming racism re their lack of results you hear nothing? Nice focus news 24!

  • Poppy Masinga - 2014-08-06 09:54

Why do only white folk get lashed for racism... because white folks were the leading oppressors in all of history and in some countries are still the leading oppressors. There will ALWAYS be sensitivity around white folk patronizing people of colour GIVEN THIS HISTORY. Had it been the other way around, i am sure whites would be sinsitive towards racism as well. People should just learn to respect each other. Laugh with each other instead of at each other and the world will be a happier place.

      Outa Kontext - 2014-08-06 10:35

That is true about white people. They have been all over the world and so have I, and I can honestly tell you everyone else has moved on (china, India, south east asia, south america, etc). Only africa has this massive chip on its shoulder.

      Raymond Harris - 2014-08-06 10:37

what an ignorant comment, all peoples all over the world have oppressed and will oppress one another, to suggest that whites are somehow different in this respect is racism in its most vile form.

  • Sipho Friek Van Tonder - 2014-08-06 09:55

we being over sensitive, imagine if I wore boere shorts, vests, boots and hat, had smoked pipe would that be racist ????wtf

  • Thato Majele - 2014-08-06 09:55

In my spare time I am also going to start by dressing up as those poor white people I always see begging at traffic lights. Just for the fun of it and so that my friends and I can have a good laugh. If I'm bored I'll then put a continental pillow under my shirt, dress in Khakhi (with the comb in my socks). Maybe better, I can dress up as Lord Kitchener and rename my house after one of those South African War concentration camps. People should realise that the things we find funny are actually an indication of how much respect we have for the world around us.

      mwicraig - 2014-08-06 10:16

      Idiot!!

      Outa Kontext - 2014-08-06 10:39

Go watch the movies 'white chicks' and 'tropic thunder'.

  • Rudzy Raselabe - 2014-08-06 09:57

There is no white and black people in the entire universe. People who call themselves white look exactly pink and those who are called black are actually brown. Go away with you black and white thing , you will never look white unless you paint yourself with white paint.
