Suicidal man causes N1 traffic jam

2010-12-14 11:22

Johannesburg - Traffic was severely backed up on the N1 south near Maraisburg, after a man tried to kill himself by jumping off a bridge onto the freeway, Johannesburg's emergency services said.

The 35-year-old man, who was critically injured, apparently had a quarrel with his wife, spokesperson Percy Morokane said.

He jumped in a gap in traffic, so there were no injuries to motorists, but traffic delays were severe.

"Take it easy. Try to use an alternate route if possible."

Morokane said people feeling desolate should seek professional help.

The SA Depression and Anxiety Group, which counsels an average of 400 people a day, is available on 011-262-6396 from 08:00 to 20:00 and for a suicidal emergency on 0800-567-567.

why not just shoot yourself instead not making it public like that.people that try to kill themselves are just pathetic and don't have self confidence

      MarkSchrade1980 - 2010-12-14 11:49

Really, that easy hey, and because you strong to deal with ur issues means that others are the same? hmmmm

      in love - 2010-12-14 12:05

@markschare1980 do u want to go and jump off the the bridge.its just absurd to think that u cant solve ur problems on ur own and u want the highway to solve it for u like seriously!!!!!

      darkblood04 - 2010-12-14 12:20

in love, something tells me you've never suffered from untreated clinical depression. And I mean PROPER depression - not that melodramatic 'I'm depressed' people give when they're just having a bad day.

      adelheid.manefeldt - 2010-12-14 13:17

well, of course this oke doesn't have self confidence - he tried to kill himself. but leave the judging to those without sin, hey. this world has too little empathy.

Mark survival of the fittest if your not strong than you will fail....

      Kaaiman - 2010-12-14 14:10

You have no idea what you're talking about. I hope your heart softens up mate

      slg - 2010-12-14 14:49

@Adelheid What does sin have to do with this?! Funny.

      henriholtzhausen - 2010-12-14 15:21

I think what 'in love' is trying to say, and rightly so, is that the dood is welcome to off him self if so inclined, but that he didn't have to go and disrupt everyone else's lives in the process! So du on you all... That said, the whole self confidence thing is a bit of a given... unless the dood is bipolar and though he could fly....

      in love - 2010-12-14 15:23

@slg u are right sin has got nothing to do with this and there is no such thing as untreated clinical depression its just a way of looking for attention. This guy is an attention seeker for real.Shame I actually feel sorry for him..Just the thot of it makes u depressed..ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

      Paul - 2010-12-14 16:19

shame, how small your world must be to be ignorant of other people and their suffering. I honestly pity you. if you don't understand something, it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. if that was true then you wouldn't exist.

      slg - 2010-12-14 16:59

@In Love There definitely is untreated clinical depression. I hope you don't find out about it first-hand. It's one of the most dangerous mental-emotional illnesses.

      emile.marais - 2010-12-14 18:36

If I ever decide to kill myself I'd cause as much inconvenience to the general public as possible. I mean, if I'm that down and out to jump of a bridge into traffic the last thing on my mind is what people like 'in love' thinks! If I'm prepared to kill myslef I don't really give a damn about other ''poepel'' and their inconveniences!

      Sue - 2010-12-15 07:35

Have a heart, you are so cold @ in love. Sometimes these people don't know who or where to turn to. It's a serious illness. And unfortunately the family are the one's that suffer the most.

      Des - 2010-12-15 09:21

i agree with "in love" on this issue, could you imagine being a person in your car with your kids and suddenly a dude lands on your bonnet and you have to go through the rest of your life (and your kids have to do the same)seeing this person die and you think you are the cause of his death, why must someone else live with guilt because you were selfish, only a coward commits suicide, everyone has issues and if you search deep enough you will find the answer irrespective of your circumstances. Pride is what kills so speak to people around you until you find the solution, your selfish act hurts those you leave behind

      JMan - 2010-12-15 09:38

@ in love: after reading "and there is no such thing as untreated clinical depression its just a way of looking for attention" is when i realised that you're a complete idiot with NO clue about whats going on in life, adn an I.Q. of a tennis ball. Such dribble. You just lost all credibility on here. moron.

      Lauren - 2010-12-15 09:56

Are you a doctor by any chance? Just wondering where you get your facts regarding the non-existence of clinical deppression from. People like you usually fall the hardest (no pun intended). I hope it won't be the case for you. Wouldn't wish that on anybody.

Seriously, can a woman piss you off so bad that you'd jump off Maraisburg into freeway traffic. At least he survived. You want to get back at your wife, tell her you'll be home at 6 and then be like ten hours late, drives 'em absolutely nuts. If you jump off a bridge, you're just hurting yourself...

There is nothing in this world that can piss you off more than a woman, especially when you love her. Women have the gift of pissing a person off very severely. However, I shall not kill myself.

      AJ - 2010-12-15 13:15

@LGVS: Men typically try and get back at a women using methods that they themselves think would be effective. This is a mistake. You can't think as a guy in this case. You have try and think like them, think what they would hate. Often it is something so simple, you'll laugh!

  • Voltage - 2010-12-14 11:41

He didn’t know his father For thirty-five years that he lived. Before he was ten His mother abandoned him For a better life Of vagrancy And hallucination of meths* Turning her heart into stone A path he later chose For escape or success. In his struggles to survive He lost an eye And the lamp was further dimmed. One evening they found him groaning Like a bullfrog under a hedge Belly-taut with rattex.* I met him coming from hospital We laughed About his rodent appetite. He said life was cruel I said, ‘Next time use a rope- You won’t fail.’ Two nights later A school watchman Found him dangling Like a maize-cob in a hut roof. Friends and relatives Put him deep in a hole.

I absolutely cringe when I read all the trashy comments that people post on this story. Do any of you wise guys know anything about this person's life ? He might not have what it takes to cope with his troubles, so therefore, just simply gives up the struggle. A selfish deed, yes, but a known fact is, that when people do this, they are in a state of insanity at the time. Maybe there was just no-one to talk to. Lonliness is a very sad situation and pray that you wise guys never land in that situation.

      mr.clever.pete - 2010-12-15 14:43

  • Faerie - 2010-12-14 22:32

I simply cringe when I read all these trashy comments made about this poor man. Certain people just cannot deal with the troubles that exist in their lives. Selfish yes, because they don't think of their loved ones left behind. It is a known fact that when people enter into suicide, they are in a mode of insanity for that moment. Maybe he did not have someone he felt he could talk to at the time of his desperation.

      mr.clever.pete - 2010-12-15 14:44

Most of these comments were in jest and can't be taken seriously. Take a chill pill and go save a whale or something.

  • Faerie - 2010-12-15 01:15

He must have had far more on his mind, other than a quarrel with his wife. Unless they were living a daily life of strife. Pitty that people in this suicidal frame of mind, don't stop just for a few minutes to think about the consequences of their actions and rather seek help by talking to someone. Suicide doesn't solve anything.!

      mr.clever.pete - 2010-12-15 14:45

Especially not when you just end up injured with brain damage and what not, instead of being dead.

  • likeme - 2010-12-15 08:20

I dont think the public at large really understand the degree to which suicidal depression is resulting in increasing numbers of deaths amongst males - and it is direcctly related to the pressures of our fast moving success dependant society. In my relatively small circle of friends and family I know of six suicides, five of which occured in the last three to four years - four were middle aged white males with serious financial problems and possibly aggravated by loneliness and/or alcohol addiction. It can be a jungle out there...

  • Dog Poo - 2010-12-15 09:01

Major depression is a serious issue that has serious underlying problems, for you to be self-righteous shows the level of your ignorance regarding the social-ills associated with suicide attempts, do not comment unless you have lived the major depression to tell the tale.

      141mat - 2010-12-15 15:59

I think people often think how it affected them and not the actual person or people involved. I will never agree to suicide but I do get that this man has got some issues and that is what should concern us. I can just imagine this man lying on the tar and the person behind the wheel of the car in front of the queue worrying that they are going to be late for work. But then again I was not there but looking at some of these comments it does not seem to unrealistic. I hope that this man gets the help and support from family and friends that he needs.

  • Susannomore - 2010-12-15 09:02

It sickens me that everybody takes these vultures lies as the cold hard truth. Its even more sickening that while a man was laying there and suffering, you inconsiderate fools wanted to take photos and get details and when the details weren't forthcoming you just go ahead and make things up. There are people that dont have a glimmer of hope becuase of people like you whom condem rather then encourage.
