Pretoria - Well-known detective Karel "Suiker" Britz was in a stable condition on Wednesday following a heart attack the previous day, a spokesperson for Wilgers hospital in Pretoria said.

"He is in a very satisfactory condition," said Christelle Augustyn.

She said 59-year-old Britz was admitted to the hospital's cardiology unit on Tuesday night.

He was expected to be moved to an ordinary ward soon.

"He has not had any further chest pains," Augustyn said.

Britz was a former assistant commissioner in the SA Police Service and headed its serious and violent crimes unit.

He left the SAPS a few years ago to become a private detective.
