Sunday Times to get 1st female editor

2013-02-01 13:34

Cape Town – The Sunday Times will soon make history when the first female editor in the 107 years of the newspaper takes the helm.

Phylicia Oppelt is the current editor of The Times, a national newspaper owned by Times Media and will take over as editor of the Sunday Times in March.

She replaces Ray Hartley who will be taking a sabbatical before he assumes a senior position within the Times Media Group, Timeslive reported on Friday.

"Phylicia has been an outstanding editor of The Times... It is a testament to her skill and dedication to the craft of journalism that she becomes the first woman editor of South Africa's leading newspaper," said Mike Robertson, managing director of Times Media.

During her career Oppelt was, among other things, the editor of the Daily Dispatch and Business Times before moving to The Times.

"The name of a successor to Oppelt as the editor of The Times will be made in due course," Robertson told Timeslive.
