Johannesburg - Free State police were still searching for a large gang who robbed a supermarket then a bottle store in Heidedal, a spokesperson said on Sunday.

The group of between six to 11 armed men wore blue overalls and balaclavas when they robbed the Shoprite in Twin City Mall, Heidedal, at about 19:00 on Friday night, Captain Harry Nagel said.

''The men armed with long rifles and pistols went into the chain store demanding money. They took an undisclosed amount of money and then went to the liquor outlet of the same store where they took expensive liquors,'' said Nagel.

The robbers escaped in the chaos of shoppers running away but ran into a police vehicle which has responded to a call for help.

They fired at the police, and a constable's fingers were wounded.

This group drove away from the scene, but the rest of the gang hijacked a Toyota Run X with a woman and her daughter inside.

They dropped the child at the entrance of the mall where she was found by the police.

She was taken to Pelonomi hospital to be treated for injuries and her vehicle was later found abandoned in Batho. A Nissan 1400 which they had also used was also found in East End.

''Most of the patrons suffered trauma,'' said Nagel.

The policeman will be operated on on Sunday.
