Johannesburg - An injured surfer was rescued at Noordhoek on Monday, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said on Tuesday.

"A surfer, aged approximately 40, was found on the rocks at The Hoek suffering a fractured left tibia and fibula believed to have been sustained while he was surfing in deep water," said spokesperson Craig Lambinon.

Other surfers that had been surfing there at the time were preparing to leave the beach at dusk when they heard the man's screams for help and they had gone into the water and rescued the surfer onto nearby rocks.

Lambinon said the man was stabilised on the scene and transported to False Bay Hospital in a stable condition.
