Suspect killed after aiming toy gun at cops

2012-10-01 18:28

Johannesburg - Police shot and killed a man who pointed a toy firearm at them in Willowvale, Eastern Cape police said on Monday.

Captain Jackson Manatha said the man was among a group of eight men police spotted breaking into a house in Nkelekethe village on Saturday afternoon.

"The men were cornered, but two of them managed to flee on foot," he said.

A chase ensued in which one of the fleeing men was cornered again.

He produced a firearm and ran towards police who then fired several shots at him.

"Police responded in self-defence killing the suspect instantly," said Manatha.

It was later established that the firearm in the man's possession had been a toy. A knife was also found in his possession.

Six men were arrested and detained at the Willowvale police station.

They were expected to appear in the Willowvale Magistrate's Court soon to face a charge of house robbery.

The men were also linked to other house robberies reported in the area. The eighth man was still at large.

talk about stupidity, I'm sure the sangoma told him he'll be invincible

      dan.cooper.9634 - 2012-10-01 23:38

Ja , but dont forget. The sangoma told him to leave RABBITS and THE POLICE ALONE , OTHERWISE THE MUTI WONT WORK

      leenesh.singh - 2012-10-02 09:30

My first guess was that the cops shot him and planted the toy gun, but I see all the comments here point to the stupidity of the dead guy. So are we all starting to have faith in our cops?

  • johan.jacobs.5680 - 2012-10-01 18:36

  • brandon.mccutcheon.56 - 2012-10-01 18:38

What was he thinking? Did he think the cops would run away? Definitely a Darwin awards candidate!

      dan.cooper.9634 - 2012-10-01 23:40

Pity the police can kill an idjit like that only once. maybe he must ask the sangoma for his other 8 lives so that the police can kill himm again . Such stupidity should be rewarded by death TWICE

  • fdalana - 2012-10-01 18:52

Rule No 1 Never bring a Knife to a gunfight Rule No 2 Never bring a toy gun to a gun fight or a knife fight.

  • cya.khubone - 2012-10-01 19:28

Lol ay this guy was a comedian in a wrong industry

  • gordon.turner.37 - 2012-10-01 19:28

Not a bad lesson for all the weekend Rambos who think you can use an airsoft replica for self defense when there is a crook with a knife or a real gun coming the other way. Pepper spray and a baseball bat is a better option.

      matodzi.steveraliwedzha - 2012-10-01 19:41

@ gordon in real life situation der is no tym 2 differentiate between a real gun n a toy n I say big up 2 de police.

      gordon.turner.37 - 2012-10-01 19:51

Exactly. So point a toy gun at your house burglar and you will get shot. I am with the police 100%, I am saying it works both ways. Arm yourself properly or don't bother, it is asking for bigger trouble.

      sarel.brits - 2012-10-02 07:04

Pepper spray and a baseball bat? No introduce them to Mr Smith and Mr Western 357 magnum to be precise these gentlemen will leave a lasting impression on any criminal.

  • Stewart Croucamp - 2012-10-01 19:30

  • mikeangell61 - 2012-10-01 19:49

  • siyaz.mcitakali.3 - 2012-10-01 20:06

Okay now that's just plain stupidity. How do draw a toy gun towards a person you know for a fact that with him/her there is always live ammunition? Mfxm that was just an application from him and it was approved!

  • emil.snr - 2012-10-01 21:13

    Mooi manne! Bleksem helle!!

  • sarel.brits - 2012-10-01 21:35

  • gerrit.vanpletzen - 2012-10-02 07:00

Don't come to a gunfight with a toygun.

  • sarel.brits - 2012-10-02 07:15

Why did this village idiot crim not have a real gun?, I heard the SAPS was handing out weapons to crims, how many did they \misplace\? I stand to be corrected but was it not about 3000 fire arms? No reason why this could not have been a fair fight! But hey in this case well done to SAPS for taking the dumb ass out of the gene pool.

  • andre.vandeventer.16 - 2012-10-02 07:22

How dumb can you get? It just proves they are unable to foresee the consequences of their actions. Like a lt/col wearing stolen medals of an era that he was not part of. And he was the officer commanding nogal!

  • carolyn.dewrance - 2012-10-02 09:35

good one less to worry about

  • logan.naidoo - 2012-10-02 13:27

Glad he didn't get away with it, but I find it hard 2 believe that he would've threatened the cops with the toy gun. Seems more like a cover up for shooting a robber.

  • Bluemoscow - 2012-10-02 13:52

One shot would have been enough to dis arm him but several shots to kill him. What if that person was mentally ill and was just playing. What about the other people with mental disabilities and kids just playing with toy guns are they going to be shot dead and hide under self defence people must be very carefull a police might shoot you if you carry a cellphone thinking it is a gun, what if the police just shot the man running and then bought a toy gun and framed him everyone has the right to live

      bakers.dozen.14 - 2012-10-04 16:43

Ok @ Bluemoscow : Right, so now we must stop and ask "hey Dude, are you right in the head ?" or "Why are you and your other 7 buddies breaking in to this house"? "Are you mad?" "Is that gun you are pointing at me real or is it a toy" I am going to shoot you only once just incase it is a toy. ''Bang ! " oops, sorry got you in the head. Youre still dead. Moral of the story if you do the crime you do the time. Read the law: toy or naw all the same: you die.
