Suspected hijackers held after car chase

2012-12-12 07:27

Johannesburg - Two men were arrested for possession of a suspected stolen vehicle after a car chase near Tembisa on Tuesday, Gauteng police said.

A police reservist who was on his way home noticed a car travelling at high speed and followed it, Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale said.

He called for backup from the flying squad.

"The suspects noticed police on the Tembisa/Kempton Park ramp. The suspects jumped out of their vehicle and fled into the nearby cornfields," she said.

The two men were arrested, and a firearm was found in their possession.

Police later established that the Audi they were travelling in was reported as used in a hijacking in Doornkloof.

The pair will appear in court soon on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, as well as possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle.

These goons were not professionals, why go at high speeds and raise attention instead of driving at nromal speeds then dump the car and let the police find them.

The question needs to be asked: “Why is crime and, in particular, violent crime on the rise in post-1994 South Africa?” Our human rights-based Constitution overnight transformed the notion of punishment for the crime into rehabilitation. Suddenly criminals were no longer to be viewed as the scum of society, deserving of retribution from authorities. We do not need a Constitution that balances the rights of murderers, robbers and rapists against those of their victims. We do not need a Constitution that takes care of the medical requirements of murderers, robbers and rapists while their injured victims are left to fend for themselves. We surely do not need a Constitution that has become a liability to our criminal justice system. Letepe Maisela - Sunday Times 22/04/2007
