Durban - A male nurse who allegedly raped a mentally ill patient at Osindisweni Hospital appeared in the Verulam Magistrate's Court on Monday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

"Sandile Buthelezi, 31, was released on R2 000 bail and the matter was postponed until February 20," Captain Thulani Zwane said.

Buthelezi allegedly raped a 28-year-old woman in the showers at the hospital in Verulam, north of Durban, on December 25.

He reportedly ran away from the hospital after police questioned him but was arrested on December 28.

OK, so folks, a woman's dignity and life is worth R2000-00 today in SA. WTF are you people thinking?! This rapist should be hanged, get the lethal injection or stoned! What do they do? Give him bail! Now tell me that is not a huge statement saying it is "not so bad" to rape a woman - and that one that could not even defend herself! He ran away after questioning...he is a flight risk and they give him bail! Totally baffled.

Release the scum and let the honest civilians suffer ! Does this really make any sense , I'm sure he's just going to do it again ! But then the Police , Government or the Court should be held accountable. Damn the man.

It's sad to see the knee-jerk reaction; whilst I'm not condoning rape or any other brutal crime, the guy is innocent until proven otherwise - how would you feel if a family member of yours was falsely accused of a crime, and spent 2 years in Westville prison awaiting trial?
