Johannesburg - A suspected rhino poacher has been shot dead at the Kruger National Park in Polokwane, Limpopo police said on Sunday.

Another person was wounded in Saturday's shootout between SA National Parks (SANParks) rangers and three men, said police spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi.

"It is alleged the park rangers noticed three men within the Punda Maria - Boxahuku Mountains at the Kruger Park and ordered them to stop," he said.

"The men allegedly shot at the rangers who then returned fire."

One man died at the scene and another sustained wounds to the left knee and right thigh.

"The other surrendered and has been arrested. One hunting rifle with ammunition, one axe, one knife and three cellphones have been confiscated," said Mulaudzi.

He said the dead man was wearing a Mozambican soldier's uniform while the other two were clad in the SANParks attire.

The surviving men would face charges including rhino poaching, attempted murder, trespassing, possession of unlicensed firearms and impersonating SANParks officials.
