Pietermaritzburg - Alert police officers arrested three men suspected of the murder of a Newcastle man before it was even discovered he had been killed.

Members of the Pietermaritzburg Organised Crime Unit based in Newcastle were doing their normal stop-and-search duties at the Msinga area on Tuesday when their suspicions were aroused by a VW Polo with a Newcastle registration number.

They searched the vehicle and the occupants apparently could not give a satisfactory explanation for their possession of the car.

“The members circulated [a description of] the vehicle and it showed that the owner was Afcor Khan, 31, living in Newcastle. Newcastle Highway patrol was tasked to visit the owner to find out about the vehicle,” said police spokesperson Thulani Zwane.

They learnt from the family that Khan was using it for fishing at Weir dam and that they last saw him on Monday when he went fishing.

“A search was conducted to look for Khan. His body was found about 10 metres from the river bank with head injuries,” Zwane said.
