Johannesburg - Nine people were arrested for a robbery and a separate drive-by shooting that left one person dead on the East Rand on Thursday, Ekurhuleni metro police said.

Spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said the four people arrested for the shooting, and the five alleged house robbers, all admitted to their crimes.

The drive-by shooting happened at the Somhlolo taxi rank in Vosloorus on Thursday. Several people were shot and wounded.

The four alleged shooters were found in a white Toyota Hilux, and were allegedly in possession of three loaded and licensed firearms.

"The four suspects admitted to having been involved in the drive-by shooting," Kgagaso said.

House robbery

In the other incident, an alert was issued for a blue Audi A4 sedan that was seen driving away from the scene of a house robbery in Boksburg on Thursday.

When metro police spotted the vehicle in Vosloorus they signalled for the car to stop. Three men jumped out and tried to run away, with one dropping a 9mm pistol in the process.

The police chased them and arrested them.

"The trio sang like canaries and led the metro police to two other suspects who they claimed were their accomplices in the house robbery that took place earlier the same day in Boksburg North," Kgagaso said.

The suspects also led police to their rented house in Dawn Park where 150 rounds of live ammunition and a 9mm magazine were allegedly hidden in a sofa.

The alleged shooters and robbers were expected to appear separately in the Vosloorus Magistrate’s Court soon.
