Mbombela - An Mpumalanga man found guilty of touching an 11-year-old girl's private parts over a period of four months has been handed a suspended sentence.

Sakhile Mona, 33, from Matsulu outside Mbombela, pleaded guilty to charges of sexual assault when appearing in the Nelspruit Regional Court on Friday.

"I plead guilty in my fullest mind and sound and sober senses without [undue] influence," Mona told the court.

Mona said that between February and June last year he had called the girl into his room at his parents' home and touched her private parts without undressing her.

"I did it on several occasions. I now know that my actions were unlawful and are punishable by law. I also apologise to the victim and her family, the community and the court," Mona said.

Magistrate Vanessa Joubert said the court was satisfied that he pleaded guilty and that all elements of the crime had been established.

"You are found guilty as charged," Joubert said.

Joubert added that although the accused pleaded guilty and showed remorse, the act was a direct disregard for the victim's privacy and dignity.

"The victim suffered and this will come out again later in her life," she said.

The magistrate said although the victim was not closely related to the accused, such cases had become common.

"You are not to be found committing a similar offence for a period of five years. Your name will be entered into the national Register for Sexual Offenders and you are unsuitable to work with children," said Joubert, after handing Mona a five-year prison sentence which was suspended for five years.
