Johannesburg - A hiker has fallen to his death, after plunging 30 metres off Table Mountain in Cape Town on Saturday morning, governmental emergency services said.

"A 32-year-old neurologist was hiking with a friend near Plattekloof Gorge when somehow he fell," service spokesperson Keri Davids said.

"It [the fall] was approximately 30m."

She said various emergency and medical personnel were dispatched in a helicopter to reach the man.

However, he had sustained critical neck and head injuries and died on the scene.

His body was retrieved and hoisted onto the helicopter.

The man's family were on the scene when the body was collected by forensic pathologists.

The dregs of humanity; those people who rape, kill and have no feelings.

Condolences to the family. What an awful thing to happen.

This is really sad, so many people don't seem to realise how dangerous Table Mountain can be if one is not careful. An acquaintance of mine fell in Skeleton Gorge just over a year ago, luckily he survived but is only just beginning to walk again, after being told he may neve walk again.

Sloppy reporting - If he was on Table Mountain he fell at PLATTEKLIP Gorge - Plattekloof is a suburb to the north west of the N1 near Bellville

It's a quote- so the reporting is quite accurate, it is the services' spokesperson that is incorrect.

Hi Johnny - I wonder who WOULD give your comment a thumbs down? A coward maybe? Hopefully the person responds and shows himself or herself or itself. :)

Nazier Khan, 37 yrs old, was a dear friend. Words cannot explain the shock and grief at his sudden death. He was at the height of his career. A talented physician, a good father, son, friend, philanthropist, athlete with a passion for life and people. You will be missed. Condolences to his family and friends.

I have climb Table Mountain hundreds times, why would one fall there.

      zoalmog - 2012-01-06 21:29

Depends on where you climb, the conditions, etc. Was not quite Platteklip where he slipped and fell. Nazier will be sorely missed by a great deal -it was clear from his funeral. He was very special person and it is a reminder that we never know when our time is up. May Allah grant him eternal peace and a lofty station, and his family sabr/peace in their hearts.
