Johannesburg - A special task team will investigate the killing of a 60-year-old induna (headman) in Maqongqo, KwaZulu-Natal Community Safety MEC Willies Mchunu said on Monday.

Ben Mkhize was killed on Saturday around 22:00 when a group of men shot him in his Maqongqo tuck shop, near Vryheid, community safety spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane said in a statement.

The group of men asked Mkhize for a beer. When he turned around he was shot. The group of men fled the scene.

"The motive of the killing is still unknown and no arrests have been made," Ncalane said.

On Sunday, Mchunu and Provincial Agriculture MEC Meshack Hadebe visited the Maqongqo area and the Mkhize family. A high-level task team from the province would investigate Mkhize's killing.

"We will work with the traditional council and all structures in the area to find the perpetrators," Mchunu said.

He appealed to local residents to help the investigation.
