22 die in Pinetown crash

22 people were killed when a truck hit four fully-laden minibus taxis and a Volkswagen Golf on the corners of Field's Hill (M13) and Richmond roads in Pinetown. See all the pictures.

Durban - The National Prosecuting Authority says it cannot yet say what went wrong in last week’s horrific Pinetown crash which claimed 22 lives but a team has already been tasked with finding ways to improve safety on the ill-fated road.

Sanele Goodness May, 23, from Swaziland was on Monday charged with 22 counts of murder and reckless and negligent driving.

The accident occurred when the articulated truck May was driving hit four fully-laden minibus taxis and a Volkswagen Golf on the corners of Field's Hill (M13) and Richmond roads in Pinetown shortly before 19:00 on Thursday last week.

The case was postponed until 16 September. May remains in custody at the Pinetown police station holding cells.

The task team comprising road and engineering experts and police would recommend to the provincial transport department better ways of dealing with traffic on the M13, The Mercury reported.

The team has been given a one-week deadline.

A dash-cam shows the truck skipping a red light and ploughing through vehicles but the NPA says it’s still too early to tell what went wrong, Eyewitness News reported.
