Tonga - An Mpumalanga man, found guilty of killing a fellow tavern patron with a beer bottle, has been sentenced to eight years imprisonment.

The convicted man, Donald Mabuza, 22, of Sibhejane village near the Swazi and Mozambican border, was sentenced when he appeared in the Tonga Regional Court on Thursday, a News24 correspondent reported.

Initially, he had pleaded not guilty to murder, but changed his plea statement on Wednesday.

On Thursday, Magistrate Edgar Moletsane also found him guilty of killing Sipho Sambo, 36, of Sibhejane, at about 04:00 on January 1 2015.

Sambo was hit with a full beer bottle on the forehead before he collapsed and was rushed to hospital where he later died.

Before sentencing, Magistrate Moletsane told the court that Mabuza's sentence would send a strong message to would-be-criminals as well as the general public.

Moletsane said that such crimes were committed by people of Mabuza's age.

He said even though Mabuza did not plan the murder he allowed his anger to get out of control.

"I want to give you a sentence which will make people gasp and those who are still planning to commit crime to stop it.

"You are facing a serious crime which is very much usual in this area.

"You had anger when you saw the deceased dancing on the dance floor and you approached him to argue about something that happened some time ago," said Moletsane.

Mabuza was arrested shortly after the incident.
