Pretoria - A taxi driver was killed when he was flung out of his vehicle during a collision on the N1 in Midrand on Tuesday, paramedics said.

ER24 spokeswoman Vanessa Jackson said paramedics found the driver, in his 20s, lying on the road at the Allandale off ramp. He had already died from his injuries.

The taxi collided with a truck and two other vehicles. There were no passengers in the taxi. The cause of the collision was not clear.

Passengers from the other vehicles involved in the accident needed no further medical attention.

      Sean - 2012-05-22 15:28

Finally a good news article. Pity this doesn't happen more often, for the drivers that is. Somehow they miraculously survive but their passengers always get killed.

      mihaip007 - 2012-05-22 15:31

can't say this news made me sad..! sorry - just can't! LOL

  • Matthew - 2012-05-22 14:32

And these are the guys demanding the Metro do as they say and leave them to rule the roads of South Africa. I honestly hope more find the same fate, and that the drivers and only the drivers get hurt.not the passengers, who always seem to be the ones that suffer most at these hooligans hands =/

      Mark - 2012-05-22 14:38

My sentiments exactly. This delayed me for 45 minutes en-route to Centurion. Further back, commuters were delayed for more than an hour. It could only be the taxi drivers fault. They just barge their way through the traffic but unfortunately for this guy he found out that a huge truck is not so easily intimated.

      Irma - 2012-05-22 15:39

So sorry to hear you were delayed Mark... of course, someone has lost there son, maybe this taxi driver had a child... but screw him because his death inconvenienced you, right?

  • Wilhelm - 2012-05-22 14:35

Don't worry everyone. Its perfectly legal these days for taxi's not to be fined for breaking the law.

      Wilhelm - 2012-05-22 14:36

      Luckily he had no passengers.

  • Bless Boswell - 2012-05-22 14:39

How is it that taxi drivers don't have to obey rules of the road in KZN?

  • i2meleng - 2012-05-22 14:48

Speed kills.Respect the rules of the road mageza. Thank God no passengers were in that taxi.

  • Mshini - 2012-05-22 14:50

I was stuck in that trafic it took us more than 1hr 30min to pass through that area as only one lane was opened.

      morne.jordaan.7 - 2012-05-22 15:57

I'm sure that the deceased driver is very sorry for inconveniencing you... I am very sorry to hear that you got stuck in traffic... By the way, I was being sarcastic...

  • Susan - 2012-05-22 14:52

One taxi driver and the hundreds of lives he has taken...

      Irma - 2012-05-22 15:37

Gosh- you make it sound like he was a mass murderer. How do you know he has taken ANY lives? Did you know him personally?

  • Richard - 2012-05-22 14:55

How many accidents are there in a week involving these Taxis and then we are to hear that they will not be fined during peak hours any longer so they are above the law. This is reckless of the state which endangers the lives of other road users and the passengers. How can it then be said that there is an ongoing campaign to reduce deaths on the roads when the biggest culprits receive carte blanche. Then Metro Police still deny this so they are then still deceiving the other innocent people for those who did not see the article of Metro Police denying such instruction but nameless employees gave interviews to the media.

  • Roger - 2012-05-22 15:10

  • barry.boake - 2012-05-22 15:25

  • nompakamiso - 2012-05-22 15:28

  • Irma - 2012-05-22 15:36

I’m shocked at these comments. Really. A life has been lost and there is, “no condolences” or “sorry to the family”? How sick are you people? Not all taxi drivers are bad drivers- I’ve seen my fair share of decent drivers (one was even so kind as to stop on a busy road for me to turn because NO ONE else was prepared to stop and let me dart through). He was a young guy in his 20’s. You don’t know what the cause of accident was- mechanical failure or whatever. Have some freaking respect and stop being so happy at the loss of a live, you vultures.

      morne.jordaan.7 - 2012-05-22 15:52

And still you get thumbs down without anyone even clarifying why... But that's how it goes in South Africa, if you have a different opinion than someone, you are wrong... It's always sad when a life is lost... Condolences to the family...

      morne.jordaan.7 - 2012-05-22 16:05

And please elaborate if you give my comments a thumbs down, do my comments offend you? Or is it just because I have some compassion for a person who died, regardless of skin colour or occupation? Please, enlighten me..

      Joash - 2012-05-22 16:53

i dont mean to offend or start anything bad up here, but all is being spoken of the driver of the taxi, irma and morne, has it ever occured to u that majority of these drivers have no sense of safety, they are serving majority of the population with transportation, but at the cost of unroadworthy cars, and at times at the cost of peoples lives. i use public transportation, and it is in no way acceptable the way they drive, honestly speaking, based on the way my mother accepts their driving is an absolute shame. scared by the fact that they could get out of the taxi and start damaging the car. so are you guys trying to show optimism to the fact that this should be acceptable or die? it is sad that life is lost, but the people commenting here are complaining as to how taxi drivers drive on the road, not an attack on the dead.

  • terenceleejohnstone - 2012-05-22 15:38

Don't fine them, they take themselves out!

      TazzMeanieDevil - 2012-05-22 15:50

hahahahahahaha. some countries have suicide bombers we have taxi drivers lol

  • Michael - 2012-05-22 15:43

its time that taxi drivers were given better driver training and less pressure put on them by the taxi owners , they have to bring in a certain amount of money per day only after that do they start earning money , by exploiting these drivers the taxi owners are not only putting the taxi commuters at risk but everybody on the road , its time the govt stepped in and set basic salaries and working conditions like every other business sector in South Africa

      Derick - 2012-05-23 16:09

      Agree on that one!

  • Bogoshi - 2012-05-22 16:36

Saw the scene, and it didn't make sense at all, N1 North around Allandale is forever flowing that time of the morning, even today after those few lanes were closed. I wonder what was he upto for the Taxi to end up the way it was, as other vehicles had minor damages.

  • Raai.wie - 2012-05-22 17:35

You want to be above the law, now die like the pests you are. I feel sorry for the truck. The poor truck. F@ck the taxi driver. At least no innocent people died.

  • Célia Conceição Rocha - 2012-05-22 19:06

The accident happened because the taxi driver tried to push in while changing lanes. He collided with a bakkie. Due to to this accident the taxi was half in its lane and a truck came and took the taxi out. I feel no sympathy for the driver, all taxi drivers think they are above the law. They think the emergency lane is their personal lane, red robots and stop streets do not need to be obeyed and the can push into lane when they feel like it regardless whether it is safe or not. Tho blatant disregard for the traffic laws needs to be dealt with!!!

      Derick - 2012-05-23 15:57

Agree, they use the turn left lane to go straight and push in 'cause they can't wait like every one else in peak hour traffic....makes my blood boil!!!
