Cape Town - Eighteen people were injured in a crash involving two taxis and three bakkies in Marriannhill, KwaZulu Natal on Saturday.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring in a statement said upon their paramedic team’s arrival at the scene on the M1 near Milky Way road, the vehicles lay wrecked in the middle of the road and provincial emergency services were assisting some of the patients on scene.

"One of the taxis had caught alight and the blaze was being battled by fire services."

It is understood that a bystander that had witnessed the collision had pulled occupants from the vehicles before starting to extinguish the blaze, Meiring said.

"On assessment, paramedics found that 18 people had been injured in the collision, five of them critically. One of the critically injured patients was the driver of the taxi, who sustained severe burn wounds over his entire body."

Paramedics treated the injured on scene and provided the critically injured patients with advanced life support interventions before they were transported to various hospitals.

Local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
