Durban - Eight commuters were injured, several seriously, when a minibus ploughed into a shop-front in central Durban on Thursday.

Rescuecare spokesman Garrith Jamieson said medics raced to the scene at the junction of Johannes Nkosi (formerly Alice) and Joe Slovo (Field) streets to find that two taxis had collided.

“It would appear that one of the taxis had pushed into the junction against the red light and caused the collision. The force of impact caused one of the minibuses to veer from the road, mount the curb and then smash into a store front,” he said.

“Paramedics arrived at the scene to find that the injured taxi occupants had clambered from the wreckage with some helping others that were seriously wounded. They were lying near the taxi."

The injured passengers were treated and stabilised at the roadside before they were transported by ambulance to the Addington Provincial Hospital.
