Taxi rank trashed in Durban

2012-05-19 12:47

Durban - About 50 protesters overturned bins and trashed the Besters taxi rank in Phoenix, north of Durban, on Saturday.

“They allegedly threw bottles at the patrol vehicles and with back-up from the flying squad, the group was dispersed and order restored,” said KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker.

The incident was believed to be related to the taxi strike, which started in Durban's city centre on Thursday.

Taxi drivers complained that eThekwini's metro police were targeting them when issuing traffic fines. About 60 people were arrested since the start of the strike.

The city streets were quiet on Saturday with no taxis operating or protesters visible.

See what happens when the government aren't willing to setup proper public transport for the people? You have created this mess by taking the easiest route which requires little planning. Just throwing hundreds

      Jandl Reevo Reeves - 2012-05-19 13:06

I think you wrong bud,the problem lies with the taxi soon as there is a proper public transport system for the people they will resort to more violent protests as seen before with certain bus companies.when public transport takes away their bu

      Jandl Reevo Reeves - 2012-05-19 13:07

Posted too soon.sorry.just to finish off, they will riot if "their business gets taken away by public transport.

      Tuco - 2012-05-19 13:28

Most taxi ranks look trashy any way. just how much more trashy did they make this one? I mean did they make it trashier? agree with sticky fingers Jandl Reevo Reeves (jus kidding) these fools are always quick to resort to violence when their business gets threatened. I remember back in 2009 the govt tried to engage with them regarding taxi recapitalization, reya vaya (sp) and they gave govt the middle finger. they are against any form of order which is why our public transport system will suck for years to come. Govt is too chicken to take on the monster that is the SA Taxi association

      philani.goba - 2012-05-19 13:41

@ Taco, I agree; the govt have left these guys for too long..and now are realising how uncontrollable these mamparas are.

      goyougoodthing - 2012-05-19 13:56

Jandi is dead right. There is no way government can now implement public transport, the taxi industry would go mental. Amzing though, that a private industry can strike... do they not understand the concept? I must say that the roads are a pleasure without the scum on them, so so so much better.

      rbphiri - 2012-05-19 15:32

I'm suprised that the taxi drivers are complaining about the rubbish, since the taxi rank was already filled with rubbish reckless drivers to start off with. And than the banana republican in the ministry of transport say we have adequate transportation systems, but unroadworthy mobile coffins parade death daily and proudly on our roads.

  • Hoosen Essa - 2012-05-19 13:06

    Thrashing Taxi Ranks?? Sounds fun.

  • IcemanGP - 2012-05-19 13:25

Taxi drivers need to go to courtesy school, every 4 weeks. If they fail, they can't drive. 80% of them are a law above the law, and metro are poop scared of them.

  • Chumscrubber1 - 2012-05-19 13:57

Typical. They want anarchy, where they can do what they want. Can't believe they seriously don't understand why they are "targetted". These people are the biggest killers in the country, they should use sharp nosed ammunition on them.

  • Andrew - 2012-05-19 14:26

Just typical of the taxi drivers.

  • ivan.lockett.5 - 2012-05-19 14:40

Once more news24 do not proof read. Heading says taxi rank thrashed. Did not know that an object could be given a beating, and what is the actual news here? Taxi rank destroyed so get rid of the taxi's. They make ranks wherever they feel like it anyway.

      Aphiwe - 2012-05-19 16:51

Lmao, u know I also had 2 read that twice n be like 'thrashed' wtf. Read the whole thing, strangely enough the 1st paragraph says 'trashed'. So bad, especially 4 a heading! Oh well, they've proved themselves 2 be those people anyway so yah, now not 2 expect much there.

  • Denzil - 2012-05-19 14:42

No Govt Official or Councillor has condemned the behaviour of the Taxi Operators as yet. Makes you wonder !

  • tricia.sutherland1 - 2012-05-19 15:21

what are the stats on taxi accidents, non-roadworthy taxis and general fines etc in KZN. Buses are limited to specific routes and timings as with trains - taxis do not stick to the rules and do as they like - as they do when there are accidents and everyone is keeping open an emergency lane for ambulance and police - but the taxi will go in there and jam up everything. There are good taxis out there - but if they speak up to the ones that are making them look bad - they are threatened with death. I've had too many friends die because of taxis. eish!

  • andrew.mackie.90 - 2012-05-19 16:36

The ANC taught these people the violence that now happens when they do not get their way. Burn buses, and all means of public transport no matter what the cost to the ecconomy. It seems violence has become a way of life in this country and the law does not take action against the culprits.

  • Danie - 2012-05-19 17:40

They bgot the vfacility for free, and probably get a newer better one also if they burn this one down, so why not? We will get a different picture if every one pay for every thing, even the disabled can carry a brick at a time to build his house

      zybt99 - 2012-05-19 18:51

They pay for it. They pay rank levies and a renewable rank permit. Misinformed know it alls are annoying now.

The Metro Police and South African Police services must have strength and courage and continue to carry out their duties without fear and favour. If the police services carry out their duties diligently then the roads will be a safe place for everybody to use. A special unit needs to be formed by the Metro Police to get rid of the "matchboxes".

  • philschalkwyk - 2012-05-19 20:00

So who cares if they trash their taxi rank? who would know the difference anyway!!

  • Michael Kleber - 2012-05-20 08:24
