Johannesburg - A female teacher in Germiston, east of Johannesburg, was allegedly sexually assaulted by a 16-year-old pupil, Beeld reported on Saturday.

The school and its governing body would not comment on the incident and referred the publication to the Gauteng department of education.

Gauteng education spokesperson Gershwin Chuenyane confirmed the incident, which happened in the teacher's classroom on Monday.

He told Beeld the pupil was arrested, but released into the custody of his parents. He was also suspended for seven days.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said statements were taken from the teacher, the pupil and others who witnessed the incident.

The case was given to the National Prosecuting Authority to determine if the pupil would be prosecuted.

The teacher was reportedly receiving trauma counselling.
