PUPILS and teachers at Nogida High School in Msinga are mourning the loss of promising young life orientation teacher Cebisile Happiness Khoza.

She had only been a teacher for a month and three weeks when she was brutally murdered in Greytown.

Khoza, who was comedian Trevor Noah’s cousin, was due to collect her postgraduate certificate in education at the University of Free State Qwaqwa campus on May 9.

Quoting the Sunday Times, News24 said that the day before the graduation ceremony, Khoza had travelled from her home in Msinga to Greytown.

Her boyfriend, a fellow teacher, dropped her off at a beauty salon in the town, and when she failed to call him to fetch her, he went back to the business. The salon was closed and Khoza was nowhere to be found.

Her burnt body was later found in a sugarcane field by farmworkers. She had been stabbed several times.

Headteacher Lindani Ngubane told The Witness the murder had shocked the small rural community, adding: “The school is in sorrow … and we are worried by what has happened.”

On Saturday, pupils and staff travelled to a village near Wasbank to attend Khoza’s funeral.

“I have also been to her house to see her family,” Ngubane said, “and we held a memorial service for her at the school last week.”

Muzi Mahlambi, spokesperson for the department of education described Khoza’s death as a tragedy. “We are very sad to have lost a young educator … we were looking forward to her contribution to our youth,” he said.

Major Thulani Zwane, spokesperson for the SAPS, said investigations into Khoza’s murder were continuing and that no arrests had yet been made.

News24 reported this is the second time that tragedy has hit women in Noah’s family.

In 2009, his stepfather shot his mother three times in a violent rage.

The latest incident comes just months after the Soweto-born comedian landed the job as the host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show
