Cape Town - Two teachers attempted to resuscitate an 8-year-old boy who choked on his apple at a Western Cape primary school, but were unsuccessful, the provincial education department said on Monday.

The department’s Jessica Shelver said the teachers had first aid training. Emergency services were also called at the time of the incident on Thursday.

The school was identified on social media as Wakkerstroom East Primary School in Bonnievale.

Shelver said she could not identify the boy without the parent’s permission. Calls to the school were unsuccessful.

Counselling was provided to teachers and fellow pupils.

“The Western Cape education department is saddened by the loss of such a young life. Our condolences to the family and entire school community,” Shelver said.
